The Omaha Beef indoor football team have a job waiting for Tim Tebow if he wants it, and they will even pay him $75 a game.  A day after Tebow was cut by the New York Jets, the Beef called the office of Tebow’s agent Jimmy Sexton to offer a standard player contract.  Beef assistant general manager Andrew Mather said yesterday that he doesn't expect to hear back, but he thought it was worth asking.  The Beef's current quarterback, James McNear, has led the team to a 5-1 start.  He's completing 70% of his passes and has thrown for 21 touchdowns against just two interceptions. 

 

The Norfolk High boys & girls soccer teams’ seasons have come to a close.  The Panther boys dropped a 2-0 decision to Lincoln Pius X in an A-7 District Semifinal at Aldrich Field in Lincoln yesterday.  Their final record is 4-10.  The Norfolk girls lost their A-7 District Semifinal match to Omaha Burke 2-0 at Lincoln’s Seacrest Field.  Their final record is 7-7.

 

The Norfolk High boys golf team participated at yesterday’s Lincoln Pius X Invitational at Arbor Links in Nebraska City.  Omaha Creighton Prep was the team champion in the 18 team event with a 308.  They won by five strokes.  The Panthers finished seventh with a 327.  Omaha Creighton Prep’s Carson Schaake was the medalist with a 70.  He won by three strokes.  Norfolk’s Tyler Lewis led his team with his ninth place finish.  He shot 77.

 

The Lutheran High Northeast boys golf team hosts their own invitational at the Norfolk Country Club at 9:00 AM today.  Teams participating include Lutheran High Northeast, Battle Creek, Madison, Plainview, Pierce, Ponca, Wakefield, Wisner/Pilger, the Norfolk Catholic JV, and the Lutheran High Northeast JV.  Elsewhere on the local schedule, the Omaha Storm Chasers baseball team visits New Orleans at 11:30.

News Briefs:

State lawmakers officially receive the budget proposed for the next two years Wednesday. Appropriations Committee Chairman Senator Heath Mello of Omaha told colleagues he's pleased with the $7.8 billion spending blueprint, which has $41-$48 million available for bills that will require extra spending. The proposed budget increases spending over the next two years by slightly more than 5-percent, a bit higher than the budget proposed by Governor Dave Heineman. The legislature will begin debate on the budget next week.

 

An assistant principal at Norfolk Middle School has been named the new principal at Westside Elementary in Norfolk. Superintendent Marlene Uhing says Angela Baumann will replace Jennifer Drahota, who is stepping down at the end of this school year. Before becoming assistant principal at the Middle School, Baumann was a fifth grade classroom teacher at Washington Elementary and also taught English Language Learners at Westside Elementary.

 

A 29-year old Stanton man has died several weeks after being critically injured in a one-vehicle rollover accident north of Stanton. Christopher Matthies died Tuesday morning in a Lincoln hospital. He suffered severe head injuries in the April 6th accident about nine miles north of Stanton when the SUV he was driving lost control and rolled. He was taken by medical helicopter from the scene and had been hospitalized since. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was partially ejected from his vehicle. Two passengers were hospitalized but have recovered from their injuries.

 

A complete overhaul of Michigan Avenue in Norfolk is set to begin later this summer. Contractors will begin work in either late May or early June. The city’s Assistant Engineer, Mark Dolechek says project will run from Wood to 10th Streets. He says workers will also make the intersection at Michigan Avenue and 11th Street safer. Dolechek says construction could last two-to-three months. He says the city will work with residents who live on Michigan Avenue, but for the most part, access will be extremely limited.

 

The Viaero Great American Comedy Festival is just a month-and-a-half away and organizers have some special activities planned for the kids. The festival’s executive director, Lori Williams says Laugh and Learn Sessions in the Elkhorn Valley Museum’s meeting room are planned for the first three days: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 12th, 13th and 14th. There’s “Magic Wednesday,” for kids ages 7-to-11. Norfolk magician John Laskowski will instruct and will feature a guest appearance by at least one of the magicians scheduled to perform later that night at the Johnny Carson Theatre. Two “Improv Thursday” sessions are scheduled: a morning class for 10-to-13 year olds and one for 14-to18 year olds in the afternoon. Then it’s “Sketch-Writing Friday,” Ewing speech and drama instructor LuAnn Schindler and Minneapolis comedian Amber Preston will teach the improve and sketch-writing sessions.
