Representatives of Schiller Grounds Care are not commenting on the closing of their Norfolk plant, known locally as Classen Manufacturing. Schiller has facilities in Johnson Creek, Wisconsin, and in Pennsylvania. The firm is a source for commercial mowers, turf renovation, home gardening and grounds care equipment. In Norfolk, Schiller employed approximately two-dozen people through Classen Manufacturing. Employees say they were told of the closing on Tuesday, and were asked to immediately leave the building.
Lawmakers have advanced a tax incentive bill designed to attract wind-energy companies to Nebraska. The 30-0 vote on Wednesday came as a Kansas-based company, TradeWind Energy, considers building a possible location in northeast Nebraska. TradeWind Energy executive Frank Costanza said the company is interested in Nebraska's wind capacity, which ranks third nationwide. But he says the state has done "almost nothing" to compete with Kansas, Oklahoma or South Dakota. The vote came one day after Iowa approved $18 million in tax credits for Facebook to build a nearly $300 million data center. Kearney was vying for the project, but lost in part because Facebook has placed a heavy emphasis on sustainable wind power. The bill was introduced by Sen. Steve Lathrop, of Omaha.
Professional golfers will be in Norfolk this weekend competing in a sanctioned tour event. Not at the Norfolk Country Club or Eldorado Hills, but at Ta-Ha-Zouka and Skyview Parks. Professional and amateur disc golf players from all over the Midwest will be in town for the Jekyll and Hyde Classic. It’s sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golfers Association, and part of the Volo Sports Tour, which includes stops in eight Nebraska cities. Volo Sports founder Vey Thatch says the event is for everyone from professionals to those who have never played before. The cost to participate is $20 and includes four rounds of disc golf a players pack worth $50. Registration and a doubles tournament is set for Skyview Park Friday night. The first and second rounds are at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park Saturday morning beginning at 9:00. The third and fourth rounds will be played at Skyview on Sunday. Jimmy Johns will provide lunch for the players Saturday. There’s a free pizza party for the players Saturday night and a free clinic for everyone Saturday night at Skyview beginning at 6:00.
The Northeast Nebraska Art Association Show and Sale opens Saturday in the Sunset Plaza Mall. Items on display will all be from Northeast Nebraska artists, and each is one-of-a-kind. The opens at noon on Saturday and will be available to the public during regular Mall hours through May 5th. Most of the artwork will be available for sale, with possession at the end of the show. The Association has 33 members from throughout Northeast Nebraska, and the approximately 100 items on display will include paintings, sculpture, photography, pottery and jewelry.
