As school ends and the weather heats up, kids’ minds turn to things they can do during the summer, like have a blast at Norfolk’s new water facility: Aqua Venture. It’s set to open Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 25th. The park opened in June of 2012 to rave reviews. Daily prices are $6 for ages 5-to-15, $8 for 16-to-54-year-olds and $7 for those 55 and older. Family season passes are $195 and individual passes range from $80 to $90 depending on age. Also, Wednesday nights, you can swim for half-price. Aqua Venture will be open from noon to 8 daily and is located on the southeast corner of 1st Street and Pasewalk Avenue near Memorial Field. The best of the best young scientists and researchers are attending the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix this week. This is the world's largest high school level competition and 17-year-old Brooke Picke of Newman Grove High School is representing Nebraska in the environmental science division. Brooke's project is "Can Lemnaceae be the Answer to Nitrate Pollution in the Shell Creek Watershed?" She gave a presentation to judges yesterday and will learn the outcome today during the awards ceremony.

Lawmakers are slated to vote again on a failed attempt to repeal a Nebraska city sales tax law. Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha took aim at the law on Thursday, arguing that it disproportionately affects the poor. The law allows cities to raise their local sales taxes by a half cent, with voter approval. It passed last year despite Gov. Dave Heineman's veto. Chambers introduced the repeal bill earlier this year, but it was held in committee. On Wednesday, he filed a motion to attach his measure to another tax bill pending in the Legislature. Lawmakers fell one vote short of the 25 they needed to add his amendment onto the bill. A motion was filed to reconsider the vote.
