The NFL has provided a federal judge with what it says is evidence Commissioner Roger Goodell did not improperly pre-judge players in the bounty investigation. The evidence includes a copy of a letter the NFL Players Association sent the league on March 7 asking Goodell to delay punishment of players implicated in the bounty probe. It also includes a sworn declaration from Goodell in which he states he was prepared to hand down player discipline at the same time he announced suspensions for coaches and executives on March 21. Goodell's declaration states he held off after verbally agreeing to do so in a phone conversation with union head DeMaurice Smith. Attorneys for four suspended players have argued Goodell showed improper bias with comments he made before announcing player discipline.
Nebraska has been picked to repeat as Big Ten volleyball champion. The coaches' poll released yesterday has Penn State listed second behind the Huskers, who last season ended the Nittany Lions' eight-year reign as Big Ten champions. Purdue is third, followed by Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio State. Nebraska and Penn State each had three players named to the all-conference team. The Nebraska selections are Lauren Cook, Hannah Werth and Gina Mancuso.
The Nebraska men's basketball team has signed an agreement with ESPN to participate in a trio of in-season exempt tournaments over the next three years, beginning in the 2013-14 season, coach Tim Miles announced yesterday. The three-year agreement begins in November 2013, when the Huskers will travel to Charleston, S.C., to participate in the Charleston Classic. The following year, Nebraska will be in the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu the week of Dec. 20. In November 2015, the Huskers will play in the Anaheim Classic. All three events are carried on the ESPN family of networks. The tournaments will likely improve the strength of the Husker non conference schedules, which also include the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Nebraska’s most recent in-season tournament was the 2010 Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The Huskers will host the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic this November.
The Creighton volleyball team has been picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference, according to a poll of league coaches announced yesterday. The Bluejays’ preseason prognosis of fourth place marks the ninth straight season of a top-five prediction. Defending regular-season and tournament champion Northern Iowa received all ten first place votes to earn the preseason favorite role. Additionally, Creighton’s Megan Bober was named to the Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference Team. She is a repeat pick from a year ago. The Bluejays return five starters and nine letter winners from last year’s team that went 17-14 and finished fourth in the MVC with a 12-6 mark. The team opens the regular-season by playing in the University of South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Fla., on Aug. 24-25.
A former Nebraska football player has been sent to prison after violating his probation on a 2008 theft charge for stealing a big-screen TV and pawning it. The Lincoln Journal Star says Andre Jones, who lives in Alabama, was placed on probation on the felony theft charge in 2010, but started skipping probation meetings and didn't pay the fees. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was brought back to Nebraska in June. A Lancaster County judge on Tuesday sentenced Jones to one to two years in prison for theft by receiving stolen property. Jones, a native of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., played cornerback for Nebraska in 2006 and in a reserve role in 2007.
Starting pitcher Brock Myers struck out eight and homered, and Goodlettsville, Tennessee, beat Kearney, Nebraska 12-1 last night to spoil the debut of a Nebraska team at the Little League World Series. Zane Schmidt had a hit and RBI for Nebraska, which will play Saturday against Connecticut.

At the Haskell Ag Lab near Concord, UNL Extension Irrigation Specialist Bill Krantz is involved in a study of Pioneer seed hybrids that are drought-resistant. Krantz says the project involves native stock, not genetically modified varieties, and evaluates the timing of irrigation on the yield. Krantz explains that the three-year study compares dryland yields with yields on acres that were irrigated throughout the season and those where irrigation was stopped when the corn reached blister stage. Krantz says there has been some die back on the tips of ears, so he is NOT expecting any 300-bushel yields this year. Krantz made his comments earlier this week during a VIP Tour of the HAL facility.
Agricultural producers who hire Hispanic workers have a new tool to aid in communication, compliments of the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Service. The heavy-duty card fits in a back pocket, and includes common agricultural phrases in both English and Spanish, with proper pronunciations. Leslie Johnson, , UNL animal manure management project coordinator, says many of the phrases are related to work with livestock. Johnson says the communication aide is available at many local cooperative extension offices. Those wishing copies may also call her at 402-584-3818. Johnson talked about the card at this week's tour of the Haskell Ag Lab near Concord.

Authorities say a Nebraska Powerball player has won $2 million. The Nebraska Lottery reports the winning ticket was sold at a Hy-Vee gas outlet in northwest Omaha. The ticket matched five of the six numbers drawn Wednesday night but missed the Powerball number. The ticket's $1 million prize was doubled because the ticket buyer bought the Power Play multiplier option, which automatically raised the prize to $2 million. Powerball officials say a ticket sold in Lapeer, Mich., matched all six numbers, winning the buyer the jackpot of $337 million. Officials say the lump sum payout would be $241 million.
