It wasn’t a good day yesterday for Norfolk High & Norfolk Catholic wrestling. All six Panthers and both Knights were dealt a loss at the first day of the State Wrestling Tournament at Qwest Center Omaha. In the Class "A" Tournament, Norfolk’s Blake Anderson won his opening round match at 135 pounds by a 6-5 score before falling in the quarterfinals 6-3. Mitch Lienemann lost his opening round match at 145 by a 3-0 mark. Colby Lind, at 152 pounds, won his opening round match 6-1 before falling in the quarterfinals 3-2. Cody Merchant lost his opening round match at 160 by a 3-2 score. Cole VonDerOhe, at 171 pounds, won his opener 5-0 and then dropped his quarterfinal match 9-5. Keith Fowler won his opening round match at 215 by an 11-6 score and then fell in the quarterfinals 7-4. Regarding Norfolk Catholic in Class "C", 125 pound Dylan Field lost his opening round match in overtime 8-6 and Brian Ramaekers was pinned in 3:27 at 160 pounds. The tournament resumes today with Class "A" & "D" starting at 9:30 AM with consolations while Class "B" & "C" resumes with consolations at 12:30. Semifinals & Third Round Consolations starts for all Classes at 5:00.

News Briefs: 

 A flood advisory for ice jam flooding remains in effect for east central Stanton and parts of Cuming counties until noon today. The National Weather Service reports the level from the river gauge located near Pilger was about a foot above the 12 foot flood stage as of 11:45 Thursday night. Around West Point, the stage was a little below the 12 foot flood stage. Local law enforcement officials were not aware of any flooding of roads, but minor overflows were likely occurring into farmlands along the river.

 

 

 

Nebraska lawmakers are a step closer to passing a bill giving adoptive parents access to state files on the child they're adopting. The bill's sponsor says her goal is to prepare parents for behavioral and health problems the child might face so they can decide on treatment options.

 

 

 

Per-capita income in Nebraska could surpass the national average this year or next. A business forecast group reports skyrocketing farm incomes in the state are a big factor in the overall income figure. Farm incomes jumped 59 percent in 2010 after falling 33 percent the previous year.

 

 

 

This week is National Children of Alcoholics Week. Dr. Connie Peterson of Behavioral Health Specialists says children raised in alcoholic homes learn to be secretive. She says therapy or support groups are often needed to help break the cycle of alcohol abuse.

 

 

 

 

 

The 51st annual Norfolk Lions Club pancake feed will be held from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. tomorrow in the City Auditorium. Entertainment is planned throughout the day. Money raised will help support Lions youth activities.

 

 

 

 

 

One of the comedians who competed in the original Viaero Great American Comedy Festival in Norfolk in 2008 is returning to Norfolk to host an amateur showcase. Joe Klocek will appear Saturday night at the Time Square Events Center for the second of four amateur nights being held in conjunction with the 2011 festival. The showcase begins at 8 p.m. Admission cost is $10 and tickets may be purchased at the door or online at greatamericancomedyfestival.com. Those attending will help determine which of the contestants advance to the amateur finals June 15th.
