Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman is still hopeful that some changes will be made in the state tax structure, even though his proposal to shift the burden from income taxes to sales taxes has received a great deal of criticism. Heineman told NewsTalk WJAG he appreciates all of the comments from Nebraskans on the subject. He says he still thinks the state needs to have a conversation on taxes. Heineman wants to eliminate about half of the $5-billion in sales tax exemptions in the state in exchange for eliminating both personal and corporate income taxes.
The Norfolk Public Schools has earned extra reimbursement for school lunches by complying with the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. Interim Business Director Bill Robinson told members of the Board of Education this week that the school will receive an additional 6 cents reimbursement for school lunch meals. Robinson credited the hard work of Director of Nutrition Lanette Stoffel and her staff for making the necessary changes and completing the certification process. Robinson says the extra reimbursement will be retroactive to October 1st.
Two district court judges, James Kube and Robert Ensz asked the Madison County Commissioners to install metal detectors and scanners that would screen people as they entered the courthouses. Currently, people cannot enter the court rooms without being screened, but the judges explained that emotions often run high in courthouse areas outside the courtroom.
Doctors at Faith Regional Health Services have performed a specialized surgical procedure designed to combat early-stage lung cancer. Most lung cancer patients receive a lobectomy which involves the complete removal of the involved lobe of the lung.
The new procedure, interoperative brachytherapy is for patients with limited lung capacity. Faith Regional cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Thomas d'Amato performed the surgery in which tiny pellets of radioactive seeds are sewn into a mesh device, which is then sochered along the affected lung's operative bed.
Four juveniles were injured and taken to Faith Regional Hospital in Norfolk following an accident last night at 18th and Maple. Police Captain Mike Bauer says the 16-year-old driver was eastbound in the 1800 block of Maple when he lost control of the vehicle because of speed and overcorrected. The car spun 180 degrees and flipped, coming to rest upside down at the bottom of the south embankment. No information is available on the nature of the injuries or current conditions of the four juveniles. The accident was reported at 8:15 Monday night.
A Norfolk man has been arrested for false reporting after a video tape of an incident showed him to be less than truthful. Norfolk Police Captain Michael Bauer says Eric Swanson, 39, was arrested for third degree domestic abuse and false reporting after claiming a woman had cut him with a knife. But Bauer says the woman caught Swanson on camera cutting himself with a knife while she was videotaping injuries Swanson allegedly had caused to her arm. Swanson was taken to the Norfolk City Jail and later released on a cash bond.
Our track team had a cross-eyed discus thrower. He wasn’t that great, but he kept the crowds loose
