A ballot campaign to preserve Nebraska's death penalty will be led by an Omaha state lawmaker and the state treasurer. Sen. Pete Ricketts' veto and abolish the death penalty. The group filed for a referendum Monday and expects to have petitions available as early as Friday. Organizers launched a website, www.NebraskansfortheDeathPenalty.com. Supporters have until late August to submit enough signatures for a referendum, which would take place in November 2016.

The death of a 29-year-old Sioux City woman whose body was found in the Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota is being investigated as a homicide. An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday while crews searched the river for evidence. Clay County authorities are seeking information from anyone who may have seen anything unusual in the area.
