University of Nebraska men’s basketball coach Tim Miles announced Saturday the hiring of Phil Beckner as an assistant coach for the Husker basketball program.  Miles believes that Beckner’s coaching experience on the collegiate and professional levels, as well as his player development skills, made him a great addition to the Nebraska coaching staff.  A native of Buckeye, Ariz., Beckner graduated from Kansas Wesleyan University in Salina, Kan., where he played four years on the men’s basketball team.  He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2005.  He returned home and taught physical education at Buckeye High School.  Beckner joins the Nebraska coaching staff after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach with the Oklahoma City Blue, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s NBA Development League affiliate.  In his lone season in Oklahoma City, he helped the Blue to a 28-22 record and an appearance in the Western Conference playoffs, continuing a string of postseason appearances that dates back to his time at Weber State.  Before joining Oklahoma City, Beckner spent seven seasons at Weber State, helping the Wildcats to six consecutive postseason appearances.  He served as the program’s Director of Basketball Operations for two years before being elevated to assistant coach for five years.

Chris Colabello hit a two-run home run, R.A. Dickey threw seven shutout innings and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 in testy matchup Sunday, taking three of four from the AL's top team.  Both benches and bullpens emptied after Toronto reliever Aaron Sanchez was ejected for throwing at Kansas City's Alcides Escobar in the eighth. It was the climax of a game-long spat that began when Royals starter Edinson Volquez hit Josh Donaldson on the left arm in the first.

News Briefs:

Technical requirements for preparing budget documents will make it appear that the Norfolk City budget for next year is up significantly, but those numbers are deceiving. City Finance Officer Randy Gates says part of the increase will be because of refinancing of city recreation bonds, which will actually save taxpayers’ money. And he says the state requires that the money for the library expansion and renovation project be entered in two separate areas of the budget, doubling the impact of the $2.6-million sales tax collection. The hearing on the 2015-16 budget will be held Monday, September 7th.

Norfolk firefighters responded to a multi-family apartment building fire over the noon hour Sunday, and had things under control quickly. Residents at the building at 510 South 1st Street say there was fire on the stove of one of the apartments, which one of the residents extinguished with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived. According to Captain Landon Grothe, officers encountered moderate smoke when they arrived, but no flames or heat. Residents were evacuated and the building was searched. The building was ventilated and the residents were allowed to return their apartments. Grothe says damage to the apartment was estimated at $2,000.

Officials say the West Nile virus has been detected in Dodge County for the first time this year. The Three Rivers Public Health Department is monitoring the situation with tests in Dodge, Washington and Saunders counties. The virus is transmitted to humans through mosquitoes which acquire the virus by feeding on infected birds. Most people who are infected have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms. Roughly one out of 150 people infected with the virus become severely ill.

Jeff Schuckman, district fisheries supervisor for Nebraska Games and Parks in northern Nebraska, has been named the outstanding Game and Parks employee of the year. Don Gabelhouse, fisheries division administrator, calls Schuckman dedicated and passionate in his representation of fisheries resources and anglers. Gabelhouse says Schuckman has also been instrumental in rehabbing aging lakes and making sure new lakes are constructed with fish and angler-friendly features.
