Konner Tucker and Jaques Streeter had 17 points apiece to help UTEP defeat Nebraska 68-52 in the championship game of the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational on Sunday night.  Nebraska (8-4) did not score until 13:31 into the first half.  The Huskers then began to chip away at the lead when UTEP went cold for a four-minute stretch but closed out the half going on a 16-5 run.  The second half was much of the same as UTEP (6-5) controlled the pace.  Nebraska cut the lead to as little as eight with a 13-4 run late, but UTEP stayed ahead.  Nebraska shot 37.3 percent from the field for the game, while UTEP shot 47 percent and led by as many as 22 points.  Ray Gallegos led Nebraska with 22 points.  Brandon Ubel had 11 points.  Dylan Talley, who had averaged 15 points per game, was held to four points.

Robert Griffin III threw two touchdown passes in his first game back from a knee injury, Kai Forbath set the NFL record for consecutive field goals to begin a career and the Washington Redskins held on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-20 Sunday for their sixth straight win.  Nick Foles drove the Eagles to the Redskins 5 before his intentional grounding penalty ended the game.  The Redskins (9-6) can clinch the NFC East with a victory over Dallas at home next Sunday.  They haven't won it since 1999 and last reached the playoffs in 2007.  Trying to play spoiler, the Eagles (4-11) fell short in what could've been Andy Reid's last game coaching the team at the Linc.  Reid is unlikely to return to Philadelphia for his 15th season next year.

News Briefs:

Eight people have been arrested for allegedly breaking into an apartment on the west side of Norfolk and assaulting a man and woman. Norfolk Police Captain Michael Bauer says the incident occurred just before 6 Friday evening at 125 North 25th Street, Apartment 50. Several people had broken into the apartment, and the male victim stabbed one of the assailants in self-defense. Several children were present when the assault occurred, and were less than five feet away from a window that was broken to gain access. All eight suspects were booked into the Norfolk City Jail. Some were immediately transferred to the Madison County Jail, while others were transferred Saturday morning.

Nebraska sheriffs are planning to ask for a law that would let local county commissions set the fees they can charge for gun permits, subpoenas and other services. The sheriffs say the current fees don't cover the expenses they incur on a daily basis, forcing counties to make up the difference with their general funds. That means the services must be paid by all county taxpayers, rather than the person requesting the service. Ogalalla Sen. Ken Schilz says he is working on a measure for the upcoming session that begins in January. Grant County Sheriff Shawn Hebbert says giving counties the authority eliminates the "one-size-fits-all" approach that forces his rural western county to charge the same amount as heavily urban Douglas County, which has a much larger tax base.

The state tax on every gallon of fuel sold in the state will decrease again in January. The Nebraska Department of Revenue says the tax will decline to 24.6 cents per gallon on Jan. 1 from the current 26.2 cents. The fuel tax generates money to fund highway projects and maintenance. Each cent of motor fuels tax generates about $12 million in revenue annually for the state. The new fuel tax rate will be in effect from January to July 2013 when it will be reset.

A Nebraska state senator says he wants tax exemptions for military retirement pay and Social Security income. Omaha Sen. Bob Krist will introduce a bill next year that would exempt military retirement pay, military civilian retirement pay and Social Security benefits from the state's income tax. Paul Cohen, a former assistant adjutant general in the Nebraska Air National Guard, says the tax on military retirement pay is driving many retired personnel out of the state. More than 9,000 people are stationed at Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha. An estimated 20,000 retired military personnel and their dependents were reported to live in the Omaha area in 2009.

There is a new treatment for breast cancer at the Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. James Edney is a surgical oncologist and says instead of six weeks of radiation after a lumpectomy the treatment is given when the procedure is done. Dr. Edney says there are other benefits. Over five years the results are equivalent to traditional radiation and the cosmetic results were far superior with intrabeam because they are not irradiating the entire area and overlying skin.
