After another lengthy discussion, the Norfolk Mayor and Council gave approval last night to a conditional use permit that will allow stock car racing on the Off Road Ranch at 2900 Old Highway 8. Mayor Sue Fuchtman called the matter a tough decision. Councilmen discussed the conditions in the permit, and the permit process, which Councilman Josh Moenning thought was rushed and flawed. The Council voted 5-2 to approve the modified conditional use permit, with Moenning and Councilman Dick Pfeil voting no. Councilman Shane Clausen cited a conflict of interest because of a project he has in the area and abstained from voting or the discussion.
With the election a week away, a half-dozen Republican candidates for statewide offices flew across the state yesterday on what they called a nine-city victory tour. Norfolk was stop number seven on the journey, which also included stops in Beatrice, Holdrege, Chadron and Columbus. A crowd of more than 80 gathered at the Norfolk Regional Airport's Services Hangar to hear from gubernatorial candidate Pete Ricketts and his running mate, State Auditor Mike Foley; Congressmen Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith; State Auditor candidate Charlie Janssen; and U-S Senator Deb Fischer.
Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Chuck Hassebrook believes he could win the governor’s race next week. Hassebrook says the race between him and Republican Pete Ricketts is “the most competitive race for governor of Nebraska in a generation.” "Nebraskans lean Republican," said Hassebrook, "but we also have an independent streak and we've elected a lot of Democrats in the past because Nebraskans don't blindly follow any political party, they vote for the person, so in this race, I think people will look at me; they'll look at my track record, fighting for them and I have very high hopes of winning this race next Tuesday."
Gov. Dave Heineman is expected to appear today before a legislative committee that's investigating Nebraska's prison problems. The committee voted unanimously to subpoena the governor to testify under oath. Lawmakers are expected to question Heineman on what he knew about some prison issues, including inmate sentences that were miscalculated. Hundreds of prisoners were prematurely released. Senators have also disputed the legality of a home confinement program approved by the state corrections director during a prisoner roundup. Republican Attorney General Jon Bruning denies the program was illegal. Senators could ask about the handling of Nikko Jenkins, a segregated inmate who begged for a mental health commitment but was instead released and went on to kill four people.
