When Norfolk voters go to the polls November 4th, they’ll be asked to decide whether or not to implement a half-cent sales tax for 36 months, the proceeds of which would fund the extension and renovation of the Norfolk Public Library. During a Monday night forum, Ward 1 candidates for the Norfolk City Council were asked for their opinions on the issue. Incumbent Corey Granquist says it's appropriate that the voters decide on the issue, but chose not to provide his personal opinion. Challenger Dan Spray agreed that the decision should be left to the voters, but said he supports the measure with the 36-month caveat. News Talk WJAG hosted the forum.
Beginning today, Nebraska farmers and ranchers will no longer be subject to the Nebraska sales and use tax for ag machinery repairs and replacement parts. Nebraska Farm Bureau Vice President for Government Relations Jay Rempe says Nebraska is one of eight states that collected the tax. He says for years, dealers near the state’s borders have been at a competitive disadvantage since producers were able to travel to the neighboring states for significant savings. Senator Rempe says he expects the sales tax exemption to save producers between $9 million and $10 million annually.
A legislative committee will investigate Nebraska's newest prison sentencing problems, which took place while officials were rounding up inmates who were released too early. Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha, the committee's chairman, said Tuesday that members will look into the issue during an Oct. 10 hearing. The committee is already reviewing problems in the Department of Correctional Services, including the premature release of hundreds of inmates. The Omaha World-Herald reported Sunday that the department failed to follow a 2008 Nebraska Supreme Court ruling while rounding up those prisoners.
Ray Lambrecht, the former Pierce Chevy dealer who collected a lifetime of cars that sold for $2.8 million last year, has died. He was 96. Pierce County Sheriff Rick Eberhardt confirmed Lambrecht died at his home Sept. 22. During one weekend last year, Lambrecht's sale of his car collection drew 30,000 people to Pierce. The History Channel gave the auction three hours of prime time, and the highway through Pierce was backed up for miles because of the sale. The sheriff visited with Lambrecht's wife last week. He said she was missing her husband and that they'd been married nearly 70 years.
Gov. Dave Heineman has announced the recipients of this year’s “Be Prepared” awards, which recognize volunteers and community organizations for excellence in emergency preparedness and disaster response. The governor presented seven of the awards including the “Local Hero” award to Wayne County Emergency Manager, Nicholas Kemnitz. After an October 4th, 2013 tornado damaged much of Wayne, Kemnitz worked closely with other response agencies and was able to manage the incident effectively. Then earlier this year, when tornadoes damaged more of Northeast Nebraska including the towns of Pilger and Wakefield, Kemnitz drew on his experience to assist with the response efforts, providing much-needed resources to a number of agencies that were called on to respond.
