Shavon Shields and Terran Petteway scored 26 points apiece, and Nebraska upset ninth ranked Wisconsin 77-68 last night to put a dent in the Badgers' hopes for a top seed in the NCAA tournament. The Cornhuskers won for the tenth time in their last twelve games to clinch fourth place in the Big Ten for their highest conference finish since 1997-98. Wisconsin had their longest conference win streak since 1940-41 end at eight games. Petteway added ten rebounds. Nebraska is now 19-11 overall and 11-7 in the Big Ten while the Badgers are now 25-6 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
Creighton forward Doug McDermott was named First Team All-Conference for the fourth year in a row, and Ethan Wragge earned Honorable-Mention acclaim as the BIG EAST released its All-Conference honors yesterday. McDermott was also named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the eighth time this season, the league office announced yesterday. McDermott averaged 33.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game while becoming the eighth man in NCAA history to surpass 3,000 career points. In the process, he passed Oscar Robertson and Hersey Hawkins and moved into seventh on the NCAA's all-time scoring list with 3,011 career points. The eighth award is two more than the previous league record for a player in one season.
Reigning All-Americans James Green (157) and Robert Kokesh (174) each won their weight class titles at the Big Ten Championships to lead Nebraska to a fifth-place finish on Sunday at the Kohl Center. Green and Kokesh become the first two Big Ten champions for Nebraska since the Huskers joined the conference in 2011. The Huskers earned 79 points for the tournament as Penn State (140.5) won the team title.

The anti-pipeline group Bold Nebraska recently circulated an article from the Washington Post that outlined so-called “social dangers” associated with pipeline crews. The article talked about temporary “man camps” of construction workers that increased the risk of sexual assault. That was not the experience in Northeast Nebraska when the original Keystone pipeline was placed here a few years ago. Norfolk Area Chamber President Mark Zimmerer says the pipeline workers were a $10 million shot in the arm for the local economy. Zimmerer says many of the pipeline workers were accompanied by wives and girlfriends who volunteered at area non-profits like Bright Horizons and the Wesley Center.
Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer rejects notions that an alternative to her bill on military sexual assault would have been a stronger measure. The Senate has moved the bill Fischer co-sponsors into position to pass. Senators failed to give enough support to a competing measure that would have taken sexual assault cases out of the military chain of commend. Fischer says military commanders have been taking charges of sexual assault seriously, after being accused of treating the charges lightly in the past. The bill is expected to pass the Senate today.
Nebraska lawmakers are poised to act on income tax cuts for seniors and veterans. Lawmakers will debate a bill that would ensure Nebraska's income-tax brackets keep pace with inflation, while giving a greater tax break to low- and middle-income Social Security recipients. They also are likely to debate a tax-break for service members who choose to live in Nebraska after retiring from the military. Sen. Galen Hadley, chairman of the Legislature's Revenue Committee, says the tax-bracket bill would address cost-of-living salary increases that can bump taxpayers into a bracket with higher rates.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the arson fire at a Yankton Motel. It took some 55 firefighters about seven hours to battle the Tuesday morning blaze at the Colonial Inn Motel, which destroyed the center of the motel and caused heavy smoke damage throughout. The loss is estimated at approximately $500,000. The ATF, the Yankton Fire Department, the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the South Dakota State Fire Marshal's Office conducted a fire scene examination and determined that the fire was deliberately set. ATF Special Agent in Charge Scott Sweetow released a photo of a suspect and asked for people to come forward to provide additional leads.
A safari-themed auction drew a lot of attention to Columbus this weekend. Dozens of stuffed exotic animals - from giraffes and lions to a mounted hyena and baboon - from late Columbus businessman Chuck Sand's collection were among the items auctioned Sunday at Platte County Agricultural Park. The collection included about 125 items, including hides and skulls. Sand, who died in 2012 at the age of 69, displayed his trophies from a lifetime of hunting trips to Africa, Europe, Mexico, Canada and across the U.S. in his home.
