The Cleveland Cavaliers are one win away from their second straight trip to the NBA Finals following a 116-78 blowout over the visiting Toronto Raptors.  Kevin Love was the top scorer in Game Five of the Eastern Conference finals, finishing with 25 points while LeBron James and Kyrie Irving each added 23.

Andrew White III will return to Nebraska men's basketball team next season after removing his name from the NBA draft.  White submitted his name for the draft on April 21 and didn't withdraw until hours before the deadline for underclassmen.  The 6’7 wing, who sat out the 2014-15 season after transferring from Kansas, averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds last season.

Michigan State scored five runs in the fifth inning, using a couple clutch two-strike hits and capitalizing on Nebraska's mistakes.  That was enough for the seventh seeded Spartans to clinch a 5-1 win in the Big Ten tournament's opening round at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha yesterday.  The loss drops the second seeded 37-19 Huskers into the tournament's loser's bracket.  They'll face three seed Indiana in a 9:00 AM elimination game today.  Other scores in the tournament yesterday saw Maryland beat Indiana 5-3, Iowa upset Minnesota 8-2, and Ohio State defeat Michigan 8-3.

The Norfolk High boys golf team has finished as the Class ‘A’ State runner-up.  The Panthers finished with a two-day total of 616 after yesterday’s 307 at Norfolk Country Club.  Lincoln Southwest is the champion after carding a 612.  They shot 310 yesterday.  Luke Kluver won the individual championship with a birdie on the first playoff hole beating Omaha Creighton Prep’s Alex Schaake.  Both finished at 140.  Kluver shot 70 both days while Schaake carded a 69 on Tuesday and a 71 Wednesday.  Norfolk’s Kellen Rossman tied for tenth place with a 151.  Ryan Wittler shot 162, Colin Schwartz put up a 166, and Trent Wingate carded 173.

Local Schedule:  Creighton vs. Seton Hall at Aberdeen, MD (BIG EAST Bsbl Tourn.-6:00); Albuquerque at Omaha Storm Chasers (Bsbl-6:35); WSC at NCAA Outdoor Nationals at Bradenton, FL (T&F).

Local Scores:  Nfk Seniors 5-5 Lincoln High Sampson Construction 3-2 (Bsbl DH); Nfk Golden Girls Gold 18’s 9 Nebraska Swingers Red 5; Nfk Golden Girls Gold 18’s 3 Lincoln Lightning ’00 2 (Lincoln SB League); Albuquerque 12 Omaha Storm Chasers 4 (Bsbl).

Congratulations to Nick Kluver of the Norfolk High boys golf team!  The Class ‘A’ State Champion!

News Briefs:

Madison County’s commissioners have agreed to provide health insurance coverage the county’s employees that will require workers to contribute to their own policies and would provide in-lieu-of payments to those who chose to opt out of the county plan. The plan is the same for all employees. Currently employees hired before September of 2010 could include their spouses and children on their plans, while those hired after that could only be insured individually.

A proposed wind farm has been delayed in Antelope County near Neligh. At a meeting Tuesday, the Antelope County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to delay a decision on allowing a conditional use permit for the project until their next meeting on June 7. Those in favor of the wind farm say it could increase jobs, tax revenues and clean energy. Opponents are worried about noise and want to see tighter restrictions on setback distances on property.

The issue of who sponsors a ballot question in Nebraska is before the state supreme court. The case involves the petition drive to reinstate the death penalty and whether Governor Pete Ricketts should have been listed as a sponsor. Ricketts donated $200,000 to the petition drive. There is no timeline for the justices to rule on the case, but early voting ballots must go out before October 4th.

As hearings into allegations that the IRS targeted conservative political action groups, some Republicans in the United States House are pushing to impeach the IRS Commission, John Coskinen. Nebraska 1st District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry isn't pushing for impeachment, but believes the threat of impeachment is getting a point across. The primary charge is that the IRS Commissioner lied to Congress about the investigation into targeting of conservative groups.

Norfolk Police received a call reporting a potential drunk driver Tuesday night at around 8:30. When police arrived at the 1100 block of Southern Drive, where the vehicle had stopped, an officer made contact with the driver. After suspect tests and searches, 21-year-old Derek Lee McGillivray, of Norfolk, was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, along with multiple felony charges stemming from possession of a controlled substance and a deadly weapon.

A pair of ceremonies at the Norfolk Veterans Home will highlight Memorial Day in Norfolk. Norfolk VFW Commander Roger Casselman says a flag-raising kicks things off Monday morning at 9:30. Eisenhauer is the administrator for the Veterans Home. Casselman says a second ceremony is slated for 10:45 at the home’s Heroes Park.

For the sixth straight Memorial Day weekend, a Norfolk man will display flags and crosses honoring service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice since 9-11, but he’s moving it to a different location. Thomas Landkamer had originally created his display at his home on North Birch Street in Norfolk. But this year’s display will be on the grounds of the Norfolk Veterans Home. The Field of Flags will be on display Friday through Monday.

High school golfers taking part in the state tournament at sites in Norfolk and elsewhere finished up two days of competition. Find out all the results in Thursday’s Norfolk Daily News.
