The Notre Dame football team is a victory away from playing for the BCS title. Alabama and Georgia each need two, and could have to go through each other. A day after Oregon and Kansas State lost to give up control of the BCS race, the Fighting Irish moved into first-place in the standings for the first time. Notre Dame, ranked first in both polls and by the computer ratings, needs only to beat slumping rival Southern California on Saturday in Los Angeles to earn its first trip to the BCS title game. Nebraska remains 14th in the poll. The Huskers are 9-2 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten Legends Division after a 38-14 rout of Minnesota last Saturday. They will visit Iowa on Friday morning at 11:00. Nebraska is also 17th in the Associated Press Top 25 & 14th in the USA Today poll.

News Briefs:
Three entities in Norfolk are teaming up to promote the city through the "Norfolk Now" program. Representatives of the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, Norfolk Area Visitors Bureau and Norfolk Economic Development Council have announced a multi-faceted approach to promoting the city and drawing in new residents. The promotion includes a twice-a-year magazine, a web site Norfolknow.org, and television commercials that will air in the metropolitan areas. Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce President Dennis Houston it is important to attract new residents to the city to meet the current employment needs and to replace the workers who are expected to retire in the near future.
This time it is NOT a rumor - a Perkins Restaurant is planned in Norfolk. Courtney Klein-Faust, economic development director for the city of Norfolk, says Perkins has purchased a portion of the former Ramada Inn property, and plans to build in the northwest corner of the property. Klein-Faust says the tax increment financing made available because of a city council action a few weeks ago made the project feasible for Perkins. TIF money will be used to bring water and sewer to the site and for a public access road off Omaha Avenue. Klein-Faust says Perkins hopes to break ground on the project yet this year, and open the restaurant next spring.
A Northeast Nebraska woman was recognized Friday as the 2012 AgCeptional Woman of the Year during the fourth annual AgCeptional Women's Conference. Nancy Kirkholm manages the family farm near Homer in Dakota County. Kirkholm's husband, Dennis, died in 2008, and she runs the family farm with the assistance of her two young adult children. About 350 women from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota attended the conference, held in the Lifelong Learning Center. The day included two keynote speakers and four breakout sessions with a variety of workshops for participants in each session.
State Senator Mike Gloor of Grand Island is questioning where the Governor got the high number that led to his decision of Nebraska joining a federal health exchange. Governor Dave Heineman says it would cost the state $470 million more to run a state health exchange... a number Senator Gloor says will be analyzed. Gloor says the Governor's cost exceeds what the Insurance Department told him, but it also involved grants from the federal government.
The estate of the late Johnny Carson has given the go-ahead for a movie about his life. The project is being written by John McLaughlin, who adapted the biopic "Hitchcock," starring Anthony Hopkins. Carson was the longtime host of television's "The Tonight Show." He was born in Corning, Iowa, grew up in Norfolk and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He died in California in 2005. The movie will be based on the upcoming book, "Carson the Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait," written by Bill Zehme. Zehme was a consultant and appeared in the "American Masters" documentary, "Johnny Carson: King of Late Night," that aired on PBS last May.
