The Chicago Bears have pulled even with Detroit atop the NFC North by scoring on their first eight possessions in a 45-28 rout of the Dallas Cowboys. Josh McCown threw for 348 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, and he also ran for a TD while the Bears were building a 42-14 lead. DeMarco Murray rushed for 146 yards, but the Cowboys dropped to 7-6 and slipped one game behind NFC East-leading Philadelphia.
Four quarterbacks and two running backs are the finalists for the Heisman Trophy, to be awarded Saturday in New York. Florida State's Jameis Winston, Northern Illinois' Jordan Lynch, Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, and Alabama's AJ McCarron made the cut, as did Auburn's Tre Mason and Andre Williams of Boston College. Winston is the overwhelming favorite to win the award now that a sexual assault complaint against him in Tallahassee, Florida, has been closed without charges being filed.
Creighton senior Doug McDermott has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 27 points and six rebounds in a pair of lopsided victories last week. He opened his week with 21 points in just 22 minutes in a 79-61 road win at Long Beach State. McDermott returned home with 33 points and eight rebounds in Sunday’s 82-67 win over in-state rival Nebraska. He also became the fifth man in school history to surpass 900 career rebounds, while also becoming the fifth man with 200 or more three-pointers. This is McDermott's 16th career Conference Player of the Week honor, and third in four weeks from the BIG EAST to start his senior campaign. His first 13 honors coming from the MVC office.

The Norfolk Public School Board has adopted new mission and vision statements for the district and set goals to improve student success and graduation rates. At last night’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson read the mission and vision statements that had been worked out during a study session before the regular board meeting. Goals approved by the board involve aligning curriculum with state and national standards, implementing career awareness classes in all six career clusters and integrating technology at all class levels. School Board President Brad Krivohlavek says the next step in achieving the goals will be to set up action teams and provide training.
Students at Norfolk’s Woodland Park Elementary will return to the classroom tomorrow after two days off because of a plumbing issue. Norfolk Public Schools Director of Student Services Doug Witte says a collar on a water line separated, causing water to run into the building. Witte says he was notified of the damage about 6:15 Monday morning, and water was reported in all of the hallways and some classrooms. Witte says work will continue today on clean up and restoring order to the classrooms, with students returning tomorrow morning.
Recently the Douglas County Board extended benefits to same sex-couples. Elkhorn State Senator Beau McCoy, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, says actions like those go against the Nebraska Constitution that bans same-sex marriage. McCoy says he’ll continue his fight of legal recognition for same-sex couples and those married out of state will not be able to claim benefits here. Same-sex couples are allowed to claim federal benefits but in Nebraska they must file as single on state tax forms.
