Florida State quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Jameis Winston will not be charged with sexually assaulting a woman who accused him of raping her about a year ago. State Attorney Willie Meggs made the announcement at a news conference in Tallahassee, saying there was not enough evidence to win a conviction. Winston has led the Seminoles to a number one ranking and a shot at a national championship if they defeat Duke on Saturday. Many Heisman voters were waiting to see whether Winston would be charged with a crime before casting their ballots.

Eight hunters, including two from Norfolk, were rescued by helicopter Thursday from two boats stranded in the rapidly freezing Missouri River just east of Santee. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reports that the boats had been blocked by ice in the river, and attempts by Game and Parks officers to reach them had failed. A Nebraska State Patrol helicopter pulled the hunters from the boats by mid-afternoon. The rescued men included Eric Scranton and Mitch Scranton of Norfolk.
A preliminary hearing for attempted burglary has been pushed back for a former doctor accused of killing four people with ties to the pathology department of Creighton University's medical school, from which he was fired in 2001. Anthony Garcia appeared in Douglas County District Court yesterday. A judge said he will likely set the preliminary hearing for January. Prosecutors say forensic evidence links Garcia to an attempted break-in in May at the home of another Creighton University Medical School professor. Garcia, of Terra Haute, Ind., is charged with first-degree murder for the 2008 deaths of the 11-year-old son of Creighton University pathologist William Hunter and the family's housekeeper, as well as the May deaths of Creighton pathologist Roger Brumback and his wife.
A little cold weather won’t stop the Salvation Army bell ringers from manning their red kettles at several Norfolk locations this week. Bell ringers are on duty from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Salvation Army Captain R.C. Duskin says the money raised through the Red Kettle Campaign helps fill food boxes and buy food for the soup kitchen. It also helps fund rent and utility assistance all year and help with general expenses at the Salvation Army. Duskin says more volunteer bell ringers are always needed, and any individual or service organization interested in volunteering should contact him.
