News Briefs:

Vulcraft has appealed a ruling by the Norfolk City Zoning Board of Adjustment concerning property at the intersection of West Omaha Ave. and South 25th Street.  The dispute involves the Eagle Distributing property that Our Savior Lutheran Church wants to purchase and renovate. Vulcraft and other industries in the area oppose having anything except industry in that location.

City and county officials are voicing objections to Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts' property tax plan.  Ricketts argued before a legislative committee Thursday that his proposal offers a balanced way to slow the growth of statewide property taxes. But Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler and other officials say it would limit their flexibility. The bill would prevent the combined taxable value of all the state's agricultural land from growing by more than 3 percent annually. It also would prevent local governments from exceeding several levy and budget limits without voter approval.

An emergency response and recovery group that formed after severe storms hit Northeast Nebraska in June of 2014 is broadening its scope. The Northeast Nebraska COAD, or Community Organizations Active in Disaster will meet Monday from 10 to 1 at the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department in Wayne.  Representatives from various volunteer agencies, non-profit groups, government agencies, churches and businesses are asked to attend.

Norfolk’s Fire Chief is asking area residents to make sure any fire hydrants on their property are visible and accessible. Scott Cordes asks that residents clear the snow away from within about three feet of fire hydrants so fire personnel could easily locate and use the hydrant if there would be a fire emergency in the neighborhood.

Yankton County issued only one building permit in January, but it was a record-setting one. The permit issued to Dakota Plains Ag Center, LLC is for a $25.1 million grain-sorting facility at Napa Junction. Planning and Zoning Director Pat Garrity says the county's record for building permit valuation in one year had been $19 million, in 2007. The grain facility is to be the centerpiece of a proposed industrial rail park that could host a number of businesses that rely on railroad service.

“Punch Out Cancer.” That’s the theme for this year’s “For the Girls” fundraiser. Past events have raised funds to purchase a breast coil for the MRI machine, update the surgical facilities for reconstructive surgery and help buy a 3-D mammography machine for Faith Regional Health Services. It's Wed. Feb. 17 from 5:30 to 8:30 at the Divots DeVent Center. Tickets are $35 dollars and available at Insurance Associates and both Norfolk HyVee locations.
