Supporters and opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline in Nebraska squared off again in a congressional yesterday. The hearing was called by U.S. Rep. Lee Terry, a Nebraska Republican who supports the hotly disputed project. Opponents are urging President Barack Obama to deny a federal permit for the proposed Canada-to-Texas oil pipeline, saying it doesn't serve U.S. energy interests and threatens Nebraska landowners. Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Dennis Houston testified that the first Keystone pipeline in Nebraska provided an economic boost to his area during the five-month construction period. Jane Kleeb, executive director of Bold Nebraska, argued that the project poses an unnecessary risk to Nebraskans with no long-term benefits.
The last weekend of September will be a busy one in the Norfolk area – with activities planned in all corners of the city and in Pierce. Kim Kwapnioski, director of the Norfolk Area Visitors Bureau says 10,000 or more people are expected in the area for the variety of events. Among the activities planned between September 26th and 29th are the Lions Club fall parade, the 40th anniversary open house at Northeast Community College, Oktoberfest in downtown Norfolk, the Riverpoint Arts Festival in Johnson Park, a Foreigner concert at Divots, the Lambrecht car auction near Pierce, a bike ride, a color run, and a co-ed powder puff football tournament.
Some Norfolk street projects are nearing completion. Assistant City Engineer Mark Dolecheck says concrete work should begin soon on Michigan Avenue and that Phase One of the 20th Street project is nearly completed. The second phase is
scheduled to begin next week. Dolechek says 20th Street will be closed to traffic from south of Vicki Lane to Parker Circle. Dolecheck says the 18th Street project south of the roundabout will be reopened before Phase Two of the 20th Street project begins. Additional repairs will also continue on Sunset Circle.
