News Briefs:

The Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education is once again at full strength. At Monday night’s meeting, Board chairman Bruce Mitchell welcomed Tammy Day to the Board and administered the oath of office. Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson says Day has completed orientation with the Central Office staff and is ready to become an active member of the Board. Day replaces Julee Pfeil, who resigned in January. She faces election for a four-year term this fall. Others in the race for the three open positions are incumbent Bruce Mitchell, Linnea Gettman, Patti Gubbels and Justin Young.

A 31-year-old Columbus man has been convicted of murder in the knifing death of another Columbus man. Thirty-one-year-old Eric Henry was found guilty yesterday by a Platte County District Court jury in Columbus. Henderson was one of three people prosecuted for the May 2013 slaying of 51-year-old Steven Jorgensen during a botched robbery. Last month 32-year-old Kimberly Henderson, of Columbus, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Twenty-seven-year-old Quentin Critser, of Lincoln, pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder and agreed to testify against his co-defendants. Henderson and Critser are awaiting sentencing.

Authorities say two South Dakota girls missing since 1971 died after driving into a creek on their way to a party at a nearby gravel pit. State and local officials held a news conference yesterday in Elk Point confirming that evidence inside a 1960 Studebaker found last fall included the remains of Cheryl Miller and Pamella Jackson. The authorities also showed dozens of photographs of the Vermillion girls' clothing, a purse and Miller's relatively well-preserved driver's license.  Record flooding followed by a drought brought the vehicle into view last fall.

It’s National Library Week and Norfolk Public Library officials have scheduled a variety of special events to go along with the regular lineup of activities. The weekly Wednesday movie has a library theme: “The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice” and is slated for 2:30 today. Library Director Jessica Chamberlain says the institution's role has changed in the last 20 to 30 years, as society has entered the digital age. Chamberlain points out that some job applications, for example, are exclusively on-line making access to the internet, which the library provides, extremely important for those who don't have the service at home. For a complete list of events, go to the library’s web site at

In a Holy Week tradition that dates back nearly 20 years, the men of Norfolk’s United Methodist Church have performed “The Living Last Supper.” This year’s presentation is scheduled for tomorrow night at the Johnny Carson Theatre. Curtis Miller, who plays Jesus, says the set, performers and lighting, bring Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting to life. Festivities begin at 6:45 with music from the church’s bell and vocal choirs, followed by the performance at 7:00. It’s free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be collected.
