News Briefs:

Effective immediately, Nebraska Livestock Sales of Norfolk has suspended sales at the market. A spokesman for owner Jim Barta told News Talk WJAG that, “Due to the declining number of cattle in the area, we are going to seasonal sales at the Norfolk Sale Barn.” The action will affect approximately 20 sales market employees, who heard the news Friday that sales were being suspended. No sales are scheduled at this time and Barta's spokesman gave no indication of when sales would resume.

The Norfolk City Council approved two ordinances on second reading last night to provide a location for a downtown, drive-up mailbox. The Council voted to make Iron Horse Drive one way and to prohibit parking on a portion of the street to allow for the placement of a drive up mailbox. The ordinances need one more favorable vote to become final.

Five of the recent graduates of the Nebraska State Patrol Academy will join Troop B, headquartered in Norfolk. The recruits will work with a field training officer for six months, and be considered probationary for six months after that. Troop B Captain Paul Hattan says the additional officers bring his squad to a full strength of 45.  The new officers assigned to Troop B include Courtney Carey of South Sioux City in the carrier division; and Jesse Pfeifer of Norfolk, Dustin Nutsch of Hartington, Brian Malone of South Sioux City, and Jesse Tobey of West Point in the field division.

A Parkinson’s Disease specialist will be in Norfolk Friday to give a free public presentation on the disease. Dr. Danish Bhatti is a movement disorders specialist with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He’ll talk at Barnstormers Restaurant Friday morning beginning at 11:30. UNMC Public Relations Director Lisa Spellman says a light lunch will be provided and you need to have a reservation. Call 402-559-8839.

A little rain didn’t dampen the patriotism of students in Monday’s Loyalty Day Parade in Downtown Norfolk. Doris Nelson, president of the Norfolk VFW Auxiliary, says nearly 288 flags were given to the elementary students who marched along Norfolk and Braasch avenues. Loyalty Day has been an annual tradition in Norfolk since 1966.

Norfolk mail carriers need your help in stamping out hunger this weekend during the National Association of Letter Carriers’ national food drive. Simply fill a bag with non-perishable food items, place it near your mail box and your carrier will make sure it gets to the people who need it. Food Drive Coordinator Rick Hofmann says they collected 4,400 pounds of food last year, and they’re hoping to surpass that record total this year. All of the food collected will be donated to the Norfolk Food Pantry.
