The New England Patriots have given Pro Bowl tight end Aaron Hernandez a new, five-year contract.  The deal is worth $40 million and comes just months after the team locked up another All-Pro tight end, Rob Gronkowski, through 2019.  Hernandez had 910 yards receiving last season and seven touchdowns.  In two seasons, he has 124 catches, 1,473 yards and 13 scores.  He's also carried the ball eight times for 92 yards.

The Nebraska volleyball team moved up to the top spot in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Poll released yesterday.  The Huskers, who improved to 3-0 over the weekend and upset defending NCAA Champion UCLA, had a total of 1,488 points and earned 32 of 60 first-place votes.  The ranking represented the 83rd week that Nebraska has been ranked first in the poll.  Texas holds the second spot with 1,481 total points and 24 first-place votes.  Senior Lauren Cook was honored by the Big Ten Conference yesterday after being selected as the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week and the Big Ten Setter of the Week.  The awards mark her first career Big Ten weekly honor.  The Huskers will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Irvine, Calif., where they will take on Colgate and UC-Irvine on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead says he is able to accept that he probably won't get as many carries this season.  Coaches say they plan to reduce Burkhead's workload to keep him fresher and give the ball more to backups Ameer Abdullah, Braylon Heard and freshman Imani Cross.  A year ago, Burkhead averaged 22 carries a game and had 26 or more attempts in four.  He finished with 1,357 yards, and his career total stands at 2,654.  He'll join the school's top-ten rushing list with 90 yards in Saturday's opener against Southern Mississippi.  He needs 1,227 to take over the second spot from Ahman Green, who left in 1997 and became the Green Bay Packers' all-time leader.
