The Nebraska men's basketball team will face a 13-game non-conference schedule that features match ups against teams from the Pac-12 and ACC, along with both of the state's other Division I programs, first-year coach Tim Miles announced yesterday.  The Huskers will play nine home games in their final season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, including the previously announced Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic, which features Valparaiso, Nebraska-Omaha, Tulane and Kent State.  The Huskers will also face Southern, USC, Creighton, Jacksonville State, and Nicholls State at the Devaney Center.  In addition, N-U will make trips to Wake Forest, Oregon, as well as participate in the Sun Bowl Invitational.

Nebraska women's basketball coach Connie Yori will be paid a bonus of $31,250 if her team makes the NCAA tournament and an additional $100,000 if they win the National Championship.  Yori's bonus structure is outlined in her new contract, which was announced in June and made public yesterday.  The contract, which runs through June 2017, calls for her to be paid $673,200 a year, up from $660,000.  The more she wins in the NCAA tournament, the more she'll earn.  Nebraska made it to the Big Ten tournament title game last season and finished 24-9 overall and 10-6 in the conference.

Wayne State men’s basketball coach Paul Combs announced yesterday that the Wildcats will journey north of the border for three games with colleges in Canada over Labor Day weekend.  They will play the University of Winnipeg on Saturday, September 1st, the University of Manitoba on Sunday, September 2nd and will complete the trip with another contest against the University of Winnipeg on Monday, September 3rd.  This trip allows the Wildcats to have ten practice days under NCAA rules leading up to the trip.  Wayne State returns four starters from a team that was 10-17 last season, finishing eighth in the Northern Sun Conference with a 9-13 league mark.

News Briefs:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 28 percent of adults in Nebraska are severely overweight. Catherine Lillehoj of the Iowa Department of Public Health says there have been dramatic increases in obesity across the nation, mainly because of poor diets and lack of exercise. Obesity is often accompanied by health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. Colorado had the lowest figure at about 21 percent.

The latest tax valuation of the first Keystone pipeline to cross the state carries a promise of extra revenue for ten Nebraska counties. The $538.5 million assessed valuation is nearly four times the previous valuation of $145.2 million. The latter figure reflects that portions of the project were still under construction when the centrally assessed value was set a year ago by the state property tax administrator's office.

A new pipeline system is providing high quality water to three Northeast Nebraska villages. The Wau-Col Regional Water System provides water to Belden, Magnet and McLean. The project was funded through USDA Rural Development and area sponsors, including the Lower Elkhorn and Lewis and Clark NRD's.

The Norfolk Public School Resource Officer will be assigned to the Senior High this year instead of the Junior High. Superintendent Marlene Uhing says moving the ninth grade to the Senior High three years ago increased the number of students in that building significantly. Dave Lichtenberg is a sworn Norfolk Police officer who works with the school on legal and safety issues.

The Pacesetter Division of the Norfolk Area United Way kicked off the 2013 campaign at a luncheon Tuesday. The Pacesetters are 27 firms that represent Norfolk's largest employers. They collect more than 70-percent of the total goal for the annual campaign.

Tens of thousands of Elvis Presley fans are expected to pay respects to the rock 'n' roll icon during a candlelight vigil at Graceland marking the 35th anniversary of his death. Fans will begin lining up this afternoon at the entrance to Graceland, Presley's longtime Memphis home. Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, at age 42 of heart disease and prescription drug abuse. The vigil is the highlight of Elvis Week, the annual celebration of Presley's life and career.
