The water at the Olympic pool in London was liquid gold for the United States.  The Americans claimed three gold medals in swimming events.  Michael Phelps continued to add to his record personal Olympic medal collection.  Number 20 overall and his record 16th gold medal came in the 200-meter individual medley.  Phelps became the first male swimmer to win the same individual event in three straight Olympics.  He outdueled teammate Ryan Lochte who settled for a silver medal about 30 minutes after he won the bronze in the 200-meter backstroke.

The Nebraska football team is one of four Big Ten teams in the Top 25 of the USA Today Coaches Poll released yesterday.  The Huskers, coming off a 9-4 campaign, are ranked 16th.  Other Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason poll includes Michigan (8th), Wisconsin (12th) and Michigan State (13th).  The SEC’s LSU and Alabama are 1-2 respectively.  Both Michigan and Wisconsin travel to Lincoln this season.  The 16 ranking is Nebraska's lowest preseason ranking since 2009, when the Huskers started at 22.  N-U will hold its annual Fan Day today at Memorial Stadium beginning at 2:00 with the first practice of the fall set for Saturday morning.

Nebraska senior Cameron Meredith joined the group of Husker football players earning preseason recognition, as he was named to the Ted Hendricks Award watch list.  The Hendricks Award goes to the best defensive end in the country.  Meredith has been a two-year starter for the Blackshirts, making 27 straight starts over the last two years.  The 6’4, 260-pounder totaled 58 tackles, including five sacks, and nine quarterback hurries to earn honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors.  The 2012 winner will be announced on December 5.  Teammate sophomore Ameer Abdullah was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List.  The award is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend Paul Hornung.  Abdullah ranked ninth in kickoff returns as a true freshman, averaging 29.3 yards per return, including a 100-yard touchdown against Fresno State.  The Hornung Award selection committee will narrow the field to a small group of finalists in early December.  The winner will be selected in early January following the bowl season.

Warren Buffett's company will release its second-quarter earnings report on Friday afternoon. Investors will also be looking for clues about what Buffett might invest in next and whether the economy will improve because Berkshire Hathaway's results offer a glimpse into an assortment of industries. The bottom line profit Berkshire reports on Friday is likely to be hurt by the paper value of its derivatives that are tied to several stock-market indexes. The true value of the derivatives won't be clear for at least several years, because they don't mature until nearly a decade from now. But Berkshire is required to estimate their value every time the company reports earnings.

The latest U.S. Drought Monitor survey shows an increase in extreme drought conditions in four Plains states but a slight decrease in the overall area of the lower 48 states experiencing some form of drought. The map posted Thursday on the monitor's website shows that nearly two-thirds of the lower 48 states is experiencing some drought. Recent rainfall pushed the percentage down to 62.91, from last week's 63.86. The report says one-fifth of the U.S. is experiencing extreme drought.

A judge's decision is expected next week on a petition calling for a grand jury investigation into the 2008 death of a 2-year-old Gering girl. More than 1,700 petition signatures were turned in but only 975 valid signatures were needed. The Scotts Bluff County clerk has certified the necessary signatures and has turned the petition over to Judge Randy Lippstreu. Nebraska is one of six states that allow grand juries to convene by petition. Lippstreu will review the petition language, and  he says he'll make a decision next week. The petition effort was started earlier this year by relatives and others who are dissatisfied with officials' efforts to find out whether Juliette Geurts was a homicide victim and who might have killed her.

USDA Chief Economist Joe Glauber expects the August 10th crop report to reflect lower yields for both corn and soybeans. He says the surveys used for the report will provide the first true picture of the extent of drought losses.
