China completed a sweep of the synchronized diving events to increase its total to 17 gold medals and 30 overall. The United States had twelve golds and 29 total medals. Make it three straight Olympic routs for the U.S. women's basketball team, which has mowed down its first three games by an average margin of 39 points. Angel McCoughtry scored 18 points and Tina Charles added 16 to lead the United States Olympic women's basketball team to an 89-58 victory over Turkey. Turkey was able to hang with the U.S. early in the game and had a one-point lead in the first quarter. But the Americans built a 15-point advantage by the half, and coasted home.
The United Football League is returning with the same four teams as last year and they will play an eight-game regular season. UFL spokesman Larry Weisman also said yesterday that Bart Andrus is the new coach of the Omaha Nighthawks. Andrus was the team's offensive coordinator in 2011. Returning coaches are Marty Schottenheimer of the Virginia Destroyers and Jim Fassel of the Las Vegas Locomotives. The Sacramento Mountain Lions haven't named their coach. Las Vegas opens Sept. 19 at home against Sacramento. Defending champion Virginia plays at Omaha on Sept. 21. A championship game will be Nov. 16 at a site to be determined. The league is made up mostly of free agents hoping to get signed by an NFL team. CBS Sports Network will televise all games.

It wasn't much rain, but it was still significant. The .05 that fell overnight in downtown Norfolk at the WJAG studios and the .11 at the airport was the first measurable rain this area has seen in weeks. The Pierce area picked up .70. The National Weather Service did issue a severe thunderstorm warning for several counties across portions of north central and northeast Nebraska. Gusty winds of up to 60 miles per hour were common across the area. No significant damage, other than some tree limbs down, were reported.
The federal government has added more than 200 counties in a dozen states, including Nebraska, to a list of natural disaster areas mostly because of the drought. More than half the counties in the nation are now on the list, making drought-affected farmers and ranchers eligible for federal aid.
As corn plants suffer in the fields from the heat, the price of corn is skyrocketing due to the expected lower supply come harvest time. AAA Nebraska Motor Club spokesman Gail Weinholzer says gas prices should remain mostly flat through Labor Day, but will begin to fall in September.
The drought also seems to be having an effect on blood donations. Abby Hausmann-Virgil with the LifeServe Blood Center says the extreme, prolonged heat has really kept a lot of people away from donating blood, and the blood supply is down to less than one day for some types.
Madison County Commissioners have given the go-ahead for a second consultant to look at proposed setback regulations regarding the placement of bulk and/or the manufacturer of fertilizer. Although the proposal would impact the entire county if approved, a group of residents in the Warnerville area expressed strong opposition to the change after a commercial operation announced it would like to locate near there. Planning and Zoning Administrator John Johnson says the County's Joint Planning Commission requested the second consultant.
Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held Sunday at 10 a.m. for a $1-million addition at Norfolk's First United Methodist Church. The Reverend James Brewer says the renovation will include an elevator and ramps to make the building handicapped accessible.
