New York Yankees lefty starter CC Sabathia will miss the postseason after checking into an alcohol rehab center, a setback to the Yankees pitching staff. The 2007 American League Cy Young Award winner said he took the step to receive the care he needs and become a better person. His decision was announced a day before New York hosts the Houston Astros in the AL wild card game.
The Nebraska volleyball team remains fourth in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings. The Huskers are 12-2 on the season after upsetting Penn State in five sets last Friday before falling to Ohio State in five on Saturday. Nebraska will be in action next when they host Michigan State on Wednesday and then entertain Michigan on Saturday. USC is the new number one with Texas and Penn State second and third respectively.
Nebraska punter Sam Foltz was honored for his performance against Illinois, as he was named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week. Foltz averaged a season-best 46.9 yards on his nine punts Saturday, including five punts of at least 50 yards. In other Husker football news, their Oct. 17 game at Minnesota has been set for 2:30, and will be televised on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. The channel will be determined following this Saturday's game. This week's Nebraska/Wisconsin game start at 2:30 on ABC. The game will be seen on ESPN2 in outer markets.
The Norfolk High girls golf team competed in yesterday’s A-1 District Meet at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln. Omaha Marian was the team champion with a 338 while Omaha Westside shot 378 and Lincoln East carded a 382. All three teams qualified for next week’s State Championships at Norfolk Country Club. Omaha Marian’s Makenzie Fuss was the medalist with an 81. Norfolk’s Allison Temple shot 85 to place fourth and qualified as an individual for next week’s tournament.

With only three of eight city councilmen in attendance, last night’s meeting of the Norfolk City Council was cancelled because of lack of a quorum. Councilmen Jim Lange, Corey Granquist and Rob Merrill were in attendance. The other five councilmen were absent for reasons that included a death in the family, personal illness and being out of town on business. All of the items on last night’s agenda were continued until October 19th.
Jeff Hoffman has been hired as the coordinator for the Norfolk Public Schools career academy program. Hoffman is a graduate of Norfolk Senior High who has been in the workforce for 18 years, most recently as a department chair at Hastings College. He is working on plans to offer career academies in the fields of agriculture, automotive, construction, drafting and health sciences beginning in the fall of 2016. Hoffman says his hope is that the academies will help keep students in the Norfolk area once they graduate,
Nebraska 1st District Congressman Jeff Fortenberry opposed the Iran nuclear deal. Now that it has been signed, Fortenberry says Congress should set up a bicameral oversight committee to keep watch over how the deal is implemented. Fortenberry says the U-S should also reach out to a growing segment of the Iranian population, which wants to improve the country's relationship with the West.
A new state tax credit designed to help renovate historic buildings is seeing a surge in interest from nonprofits and developers. The Nebraska State Historical Society approved 46 projects this year in Omaha, Boys Town, Columbus, Norfolk and Red Cloud at a total cost of more than $14.9 million. The tax credit is helping to rehabilitate the interior of the McMill Building at the corner of 4th Street and Madison Avenue in Norfolk. The building opened in 1904 as a post office and federal courthouse.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has issued health advisories for lakes at four state recreation areas, while toxic algae levels at Willow Creek Lake in Pierce County are down. The tests last week by the state Department of Environmental Quality detected high levels of toxic algae at lakes in Gage, Saline and Lancaster counties. Elevated algae levels were recorded throughout the summer at Willow Creek Lake, but levels were within the normal range during the most recent round of testing.
The public will have a chance to see the newest addition to the Northeast Community College campus Thursday, when official ribbon cutting ceremonies and an open house are planned. Lyle Kathol, dean of applied technology at Northeast, says the 67,000 square foot building has been in use since the first day of school this year – August 24th. The open house will begin at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, with remarks at 5 and tours until 6:30 p.m. The building is located on the northwest corner of the Norfolk campus.
