News Briefs:

The unemployment rate for Madison, Pierce and Stanton counties has fallen below 3 percent. A report released Friday, puts the local unemployment rate for September at 2.8 percent, down from 3 percent in August and 3.1 percent in September of 2013. The Nebraska Labor Department reports the state unemployment rate for September at 3.6 percent, matching the adjusted rates for both August and July. One year ago, the state unemployment rate for September was 3.9 percent. The preliminary national unemployment rate for September is 5.9 percent, down from August’s 6.1 percent and from the 7.2 percent reported for September of 2013.

The field office for disaster recovery set up this spring in Wayne has closed. Bryan Tuma, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, says NEMA and FEMA staff will continue to work on the disaster recovery process from offices in Lincoln.  He says NEMA staff will be available to help applicants as questions arise.  Tuma assures local representatives that work will continue on projects even though staff will be working from a central location in Lincoln.  The office was opened after storms, tornadoes and flooding struck Northeast Nebraska in May and June. Anyone with questions about disaster assistance is asked to call 402-471-7421.

More than $300,000 is being granted to Nebraska nursing students to improve the health care in areas that are considered underserved.  Dr. Lynette Stamler, Associate Dean at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing, says the grant will help a variety of students and ultimately, many more Nebraskans. The grant will help pay for tuition, supplies and a stipend for current students who are from, or who plan to return to, underserved and rural communities across the state.

The east entrance to Ta-Ha-Zouka Park in Norfolk will be closed beginning Tuesday as work continues on the Southwest Sanitary Sewer Interceptor project.  Fifth Street will be closed between Jackson and Monroe avenues, and the 5th Street entrance to Ta-Ha-Zouka will also be closed temporarily.  Motorists are urged to find alternative routes when driving in this part of town. The project consists of installation of a sanitary sewer main interceptor to better serve the south and west portions of Norfolk.  Portions of city streets are being closed temporarily as progress is made, but access to properties along the corridor is being maintained.

Some Nebraskans are getting pretty good deals at the gas pump but Rose White with AAA Nebraska says the further west you go, the more you’ll pay.  White says Missouri has the nation's lowest-priced gas at $2.85 per gallon, while Wyoming has among the nation's highest prices. White says there are several reasons for the price drop. She says crude oil prices dropped to $79 a barrel, down from $107 in June. Several other factors include U.S. crude production is up, lower corn prices has kept ethanol prices down and there haven’t been any hurricanes to disrupt production for the two years. In Norfolk, the price for a gallon of unleaded is $2.95.
