News Briefs:

The weather is finally feeling more like summer – just in time for the start of school. Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jami Jo Thompson says teachers return in about two-and-a-half weeks. Thompson says half of the district’s kindergarten students will start on August 14th, with the other half beginning classes on the 15th. Freshmen will start classes at Senior High on the 14th, while sophomores, juniors and seniors will also start classes on the 15th. Thompson says letters will be sent to kindergarten parents to let them know which day is the first day of school for their student. More information can also be found on the district’s website

Nebraska lawmakers may have to add money to the state's general fund when they convene next year. A legislative report released Wednesday says the state faces a projected shortfall of nearly $4.6 million for the new budget year that began this month.  The estimate represents the difference between the amount of money the state is expected to have in its general fund by June 30 and the amount that's required by law.  It's likely to change once the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board meets in October to predict the state's future revenue.  Despite the estimate, state officials say Nebraska's overall finances are in good shape. The state is expected to see a record-high cash reserve of $707.8 million.

A Columbus man and his girlfriend accused of abusing his 10-month son have made plea deals. Twenty-two-year-old Juan Trejo pleaded no contest to felony child abuse after prosecutors dropped two similar charges. Twenty-two-year-old Julie Staroscik pleaded no contest to misdemeanor negligent child abuse after the charge was reduced from a felony. Trejo's sentencing date is Aug. 15. Staroscik's is Aug. 25. Authorities say Trejo fractured the boy's skull this spring by throwing him to a floor when the baby wouldn't stop crying. A doctor at Children's Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha says the boy had about 20 fractures to his skull, ribs, arms and legs in various stages of healing. Staroscik is not the boy's biological mother.
