 The Nebraska volleyball team has moved up from fourth to third in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings.  The Huskers are 14-2 on the season after beating Michigan State in four sets last Wednesday and Michigan in four on Saturday.  Nebraska will be in action next when they go to Northwestern on Friday and then visit Illinois on Saturday.  USC remains number one with Texas second.

 With all four of the Nebraska football team's losses having come on the opponent's final offensive play, each in the last few seconds or overtime, the Cornhuskers' Mike Riley was asked yesterday what he would like to see change the second half of the season.  He responded, "a 59-minute game."  The Huskers visit Minnesota on Saturday at 2:30.  In other news, the Oct. 24 game against Northwestern at Memorial Stadium will kick off at 11:00. 

 Day one of the State Golf Championships are in the books.  In the Class ‘A’ competition at Norfolk Country Club, Millard North is in the lead with a 367 team score.  They lead by six strokes.  Omaha Burke’s Nia Station shot an opening round 81 and leads by five strokes.  Norfolk’s Allison Temple is twelve stokes back with a 93.  In Class ‘C’ at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte, Lincoln Lutheran shot an opening round 347 and lead by 41 strokes.  Norfolk Catholic is seventh at 415.  Mitchell’s Kenzey Kanno carded an opening day 78 and leads by one stroke.  Norfolk Catholic’s Chelsey Reifert shot 97, Blair Benda carded a 101, Emily Teten put up a 107, Molly Knake shot 110, and Madyson Doggett carded a 118.  Play resumes today for all sites at 9:30.

News Briefs:

Sometime today,  a check will be written out to Barnstormers Restaurant for $27,470.31 from the Norfolk Airport Authority. On a 3-to-2 vote Monday, with Chairman Dan Geary and board member Bill Jepsen voting no, the Airport Authority Board agreed to pay Barnstormers for installing a new septic system to handle the needs of the restaurant. When Airport Manager Terri Wachter issues the check today, she will exchange it for a check from Barnstomers’ President Dave Fauss for the past due electricity bill and interest.


Students in five grades at Norfolk Public Schools will have to take an additional exam this spring to help state education officials test the effectiveness of new reading-language arts question types that will begin in the spring of 2017. At last night’s meeting of the Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education, Director of Teaching and Learning, Beth Nelson said this spring, 5th through 8th graders and high school juniors will have two sessions are the existing Nebraska State Accountability – or NeSA – reading sessions, while the additional session is a field test of new question types that reflect the updated Career and College Readiness Standards.


Authorities say a 70-year-old man has died from the injuries he suffered during a flash fire in Allen. According to a press release from the Dixon County Sheriff's Office, Gerald Koch died Sunday. The victim's wife, 69-year-old Carol Koch, was seriously injured and taken to a hospital. Police say the fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a new restaurant owned by the couple's son.



A golf tournament sponsored by Nebraska Public Power District and Wells Fargo raised about $78,000 for scholarships for students in the five community colleges in areas served by NPPD. At last week’s meeting of the Northeast Community College Board of Governors, representatives of NPPD and Wells Fargo presented a check for $15,600, representing Northeast’s share of this year’s tourney proceeds.


Several Nebraska and Iowa organizations will receive some of the $17 million in grants the U.S. Department of Agriculture handing out to help new farmers and ranchers. USDA announced the grants recently. The money helps support programs to train and support beginning farmers and ranchers.


The final report meeting for the 2016 Norfolk Area United Way General Campaign will be held Wednesday at noon in the Lifelong Learning Center. Volunteers planning to attend are asked to call the United Way office, 402-371-1040.


Memorial services for former Norfolk State Senator, Gene Tyson are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Norfolk. Tyson died Saturday at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Tyson represented District 19 in the State Legislature from 1996 to 2004. He also served on the Norfolk City Council in 1983 and from 1992 to 1996, and was a long-time member of both the city’s Library Board and Planning Commission. Gene Tyson was 84.
