News Briefs:

More than 135 people gathered last night for Nucor Detailing Center's open house. The event highlighted the internship program and partnership the company has with Northeast Community College. Nucor announced in 2005 it would locate its 50,000 square foot detailing center in Norfolk.  The center started out with just seven employees and now employs 70 and more than 60 percent of those employees are Northeast graduates. Northeast Community College's drafting enrollments have increased from an average of 31 students to 103. Northeast has been selected as a finalist for the 2013 American Association of Community Colleges Awards of Excellence in the Outstanding College/Corporate Partnership category.

The drought that has gripped Nebraska for the past 18 months has not slowed the climb of agricultural land prices. A survey of land prices as of February 1st, 2013 shows a statewide jump of 25 percent for all classes of land over the last 12 months.  Platte County Extension Educator Allan Vyhnalek says prices in eastern Nebraska are at record levels.  The average price for irrigated land in the eastern crop reporting district, which includes Platte and Colfax counties, is $10,000 an acre. In the northeast crop reporting district, the average price for irrigated ground was $8,700 per acre. More on the land price survey can be found on the website agecon.unl.edu.

Many producers are being forced to irrigate more efficiently because of well interference. But Dan Gillespie, no-till specialist with the Madison County Natural Resources Conservation District, says improving the efficiency of irrigation systems and management will save time and money for all farmers. The Elkhorn Rural Public Power District has an online irrigation calculator to help determine the cost of applying an acre-inch of irrigation at erppd.com.

A statewide survey conducted for AARP has found strong support among Nebraskans for expanding Medicaid eligibility. Mark Intermill, advocacy coordinator for AARP Nebraska, says the survey of 600 Nebraskans was conducted in the first week of March and 53 percent of those surveyed supported expansion of Medicaid - and if funding concerns were addressed, that support jumped to 62 percent.  He says the support was across all age and economic groups, with the strongest support in those ages 50 to 64 and over age 75. Governor Dave Heineman is opposed to the expansion, saying that the state would be on the line for increased costs if the federal government does not provide the promised funding.
