The chairman of a legislative committee says 162 Nebraska inmates convicted of violent crimes were freed early under a furlough program. The program was revealed at a hearing yesterday as the chairman, Sen. Steve Lathrop, questioned Gov. Dave Heineman. Heineman was subpoenaed to testify under oath as part of an investigation into miscalculated prison sentences and other problems. Lathrop says the program allowed the release of inmates convicted of second-degree murder, manslaughter and other crimes. Lathrop argues that the re-entry furlough program violated state law, because it was created without public hearings or a waiver signed by the governor. Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning and the Department of Correctional Services both say the regulations in question didn't have to go through that process and weren't illegal.
As Americans go to the polls Tuesday, eyes from all over the country will be focused on the U.S. Senate. The Democrats currently own a 53-45 majority over the Republicans, 55-45 if you count the two independent Senators who caucus with the Democrats. As November 4th approaches, GOP leaders are hoping they can win enough seats to regain control. the Nebraska race between Republican Ben Sasse and Democrat Dave Domina is especially important to the GOP, since the seat is currently in Republican hands. Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer says she has a great working relationship with the state’s senior Senator Mike Johanns, who is not seeking re-election. So, she’s urging Nebraskans to vote for Ben Sasse. Sasse says, if elected, he’ll remind beltway politicians that the center of American life is not in Washington, D.C.
This fall’s warm weather may seem ideal for harvest – but it does cause some problems with storage. Cuming County Extension Educator Larry Howard says warm temperatures keep producers and elevators from storing grain outside. He says bean harvest is nearly complete, with corn harvest about 30 to 40 percent complete. He says in some cases, moisture levels are staying too high for harvest of corn.
Colder weather is rolling in and motorists in many parts of the state may be wondering when the construction season may end. Pat Boyle, a construction engineer with the Nebraska Department of Roads in Norfolk, says the heavy equipment, orange cones and barricades will be going back into storage very soon. Boyle says the spring, summer and fall weather has been relatively good. A construction project on Highway 81 south of Yankton is almost complete but the nearby project to resurface several miles of Highway 12 may take another month to finish.
The Northeast Nebraska Child Advocacy Center is celebrating ten years in Norfolk.
