Kobe Bryant has announced he will retire at the end of the season, writing in The Players' Tribune yesterday that his heart and mind can handle another season, but his body knows it's time to say goodbye. The Los Angeles Lakers guard ranks third on the NBA's career scoring list with more than 32,000 points, but he is averaging just 15.7 points on a career-worst 32% shooting in twelve games. He's won two Olympic gold medals, earned five NBA titles and been named an All-Star 17 times.
The Denver Broncos have ended the New England Patriots' perfect run by defeating the Pats 30-24 on C.J. Anderson's 48-yard touchdown with 2:28 gone in overtime. New England entered the game 10-0 before Anderson torched them for 115 yards on 15 carries, including a 15-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Anderson's first touchdown ignited a 17-point run that put the Broncos ahead 24-21, but the Patriots forced overtime on Stephen Gostkowski's 47-yard field goal as regulation expired.

Fixing the damage caused by the Tecumseh prison riot cost far more than initially predicted and will take until mid-2016 to complete. The Department of Correctional Services says it needs nearly $1.3 million from lawmakers for replacement equipment, supplies, walls, doors and window grilles that were destroyed during the May 10 riot. The state previously paid a $200,000 deductible to its insurer, which has already covered slightly more than $1 million in expenses. The estimate far exceeds earlier tallies of the damage total that wasn't covered by insurance. Corrections director Scott Frakes told a legislative committee in May that his best cost estimate was between $350,000 and $500,000.
Lawmakers are looking for new ways to draw national and international tourists to Nebraska. The Legislature's Appropriations Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday at the Capitol to discuss funding options for state tourism sites. The hearing will explore what other states have done to attract more tourists and promote economic development. The hearing is part of a legislative study introduced by Sen. Adam Morfeld of Lincoln.
