News Briefs:

The Norfolk Public Schools Board of Education has approved the action plans for three strategic goals adopted in December. At Monday night’s meeting, the board heard detailed plans of action to implement goals concerning curriculum, career awareness and technology. Board member Brad Krivohlavek says he's excited about the process because it promises action. Each of the goals has a completion date, with the latest being fall of 2017. The board believes that completion of these goals will result in achieving and maintaining a four-year cohort graduation rate of 90%.

It’s April 15th, the day many Americans dread most. Today is the deadline to file your 2013 income tax returns. Internal Revenue Service spokesman Christopher Miller says those still working on their taxes need to take extra precautions to prevent errors. Miller says there is about a 1% chance of making a mistake e-filing compared to a 20% chance with paper returns. Miller says so far about 90% of all Nebraskans who have filed returns, have done so electronically. He says if you're unable to pay your taxes in full, to contact the IRS to work out a payment plan. He says about 45,000 Nebraskans will file extensions this year.

If you obtained your latest pesticide application certification in 2011, it expires today.  UNL Extension Educator Wayne Ohnesorg says all pesticide trainings have been completed for the year, but private applicators can still do a self-study that can be picked up at any cooperative extension office, or recertify online at the website He says the cost for either the self-study or the online program is $60. Ohnesorg says for commercial and non-commercial applicators who allow their certifications to expire, the only option is to retest through the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

A judge has given final approval to a $2 million state settlement with the family of a Lincoln woman who was struck and killed by a state prison van driven by an inmate. The settlement will go to the husband and son of 47-year-old Joyce Meeks, who was killed in the crash on June 25 in Lincoln.  Last month legislators approved the payment as part of the state's annual claims bill. The inmate driver, Jeremy Dobbe, was seen speeding and swerving erratically before he struck Meeks' vehicle. Dobbe was driving to transport inmates as part of a state work-release program.
