News Briefs:

Arraignment is scheduled at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Knox County Court for a 66-year-old Verdigre man accused of shooting his wife to death in their home.  Charges are pending for Phillip Privett, who is being held on $1 million bond, 10 percent.  His wife of 44 years, 66-year-old Linda Privett, was pronounced dead at their home Monday morning.  An autopsy, conducted Tuesday in Omaha determined that she died from a gunshot wound to her face and neck.  Services for Linda Privett are pending at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont.

A Norfolk man has died following a one-vehicle accident in Pierce County. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, 29-year-old Joshua Peterson lost control of his vehicle, overcorrected and rolled several times. The accident occurred at around 1:40 Tuesday afternoon on Highway 13 between Pierce and Foster. Peterson was not using a seat belt and authorities do not suspect alcohol played a role in the accident. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol investigated.

The two men vying for the 40th District seat in the Nebraska State Legislature met in Hartington last night for a candidate forum hosted by News Talk WJAG and the Cedar County News. The candidates discussed a variety of issues during the hour-long debate including: school consolidation, property taxes, prison reform and Keystone XL. The 40th District is comprised of Rock, Holt, Boyd, Knox, Cedar and Dixon counties. The forum will air in its entirety Sunday morning beginning at 11 on News Talk WJAG.

The Stanton Community Club will host a candidate forum tonight at the Stanton VFW Club. A meet and greet with candidates will begin at 6:30, followed by the forum at 7. Candidates, or their representatives, will give opening comments, followed by written questions from the audience. Candidates for national, state, district and local offices have been invited to attend. The forum will be streamed live at Stanton.net, and a recorded version will be available for viewing anytime on the website through election night.

The Nebraska Supreme Court has appointed a Lincoln attorney as the director of the new Nebraska Office of Public Guardian. Michelle Chaffee has served as legal counsel for the Nebraska Legislature's Health and Human Services Committee and has 10 years' experience in higher education administration. Chaffe will be responsible for building the new statewide office and assisting in the establishment of guardian and conservator services throughout Nebraska in both urban and rural courts. Although the state will continue to rely on volunteers to assist the elderly and others in need of guardianship, the new office will serve as a means of last resort as guardian or conservator for those where no family member or suitable individual is available. Chaffee is expected to begin her position in December.
