News Briefs:
The Senate has voted to confirm Chuck Hagel to be the nation's next defense secretary. The vote Tuesday was 58-41, with four Republicans joining Democrats in backing President Barack Obama's nominee. The vote ended a contentious fight over the president's choice for his second-term national security team. Republicans opposed the former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska, casting him as out of the mainstream and overly critical of Israel. But Democrats stood together for Hagel, a twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran.
A current vice president at Faith Regional Health Services has been named to lead the hospital through the transition to a new president and CEO. Tim Auwarter is the Vice President of Ancillary and Support Services. The Board of Directors of Faith Regional and the Lutheran Community Hospital Association Board of Directors announced today that Auwarter, who joined the Faith Regional staff last year, will serve as the interim president and CEO. LCHA Board President Dr. Dan Karmazin praised Auwarter's leadership skills and health care experience. He says Auwarter's appointment will allow the boards to move forward with the search for a replacement for Jim Sinek, who resigned earlier this month to pursue opportunities with larger health care organizations.
A proposed rural water system which would encompass an area mostly south of Norfolk to south of Humphrey seemed receive a lot of support during a special hearing of the Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District's Project Equipment Subcommittee last night. The system would provide water for residents, in an area greatly affected by the current drought. Engineers will conduct a study which could take about 10 months. Lower Elkhorn NRD General Manager Stan Staab says the water would be for residential and commercial use, but not for crop irrigation. Staab says the more residents who choose to take part, the lower the costs.

The six-year plan includes 22 road projects and 15 structures. The one-year project has a price tag of $10.7 million, while the six-year project will cost $4.6 million. Johnson says the last one-mile stretch of the six-mile Lindsay Highway between Highway 32 and the town is scheduled to be finished this this year.
