Residents are asked to park on the even-numbered side of the streets where parking is normally permitted on both sides.
Fire has destroyed a bank and insurance office in Laurel. The fire broke out yesterday shortly before 6 a.m. KCAU-TV reports that several crews from surrounding towns were dispatched to help with the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department. The fire gutted the Laurel National Bank, an historic structure that dates back to 1902. Fire crews worked into the afternoon. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

An 18-year-old student has been cited for possession of a destructive device following Wednesday's scare at Northeast Community College. Police Captain Michael Bauer says Reid Alden was cited following the investigation into the discovery of a 2-liter pop-bottle bomb found outside Simon Hall on the Northeast campus. The Norfolk Planning Commission has approved the final plat of the parking lot at the corner of First Street and Norfolk Avenue to allow for possible construction of a Dollar General Store. In other action Wednesday, the Commission voted to recommend changes in zoning at the intersection of 13th Street and Norfolk Avenue for construction of a CVS pharmacy, to table a request for a conditional use permit to construct a second drive through and larger parking lot at the McDonald's Restaurant on Riverside Boulevard, and heard plans to construct storage units west of the hospital have been withdrawn.
A Northeast Nebraska State Patrol Trooper was honored recently because of injuries he received in the line of duty. Trooper Brian Detlefsen of Creighton received an Honorable Service Award for his actions during a December 18th incident near Brunswick. An individual was using a tractor to destroy property in rural Antelope County, and Detlefsen's patrol vehicle was rammed by the tractor at a high rate of speed. The trooper required medical treatment for a laceration to his head. In presenting the award to Detlefsen, Patrol Colonel David Sankey said his actions demonstrated bravery, courage and self-sacrifice in the face of danger and in the protection of others.
