Sunday's NBA All-Star game featured the usual array of offensive eruptions ending with a combined 281 points, 116 baskets, 26 three-pointers and 35 turnovers.  Kevin Durant was the top scorer, delivering 30 points as the West beat the East 143-138 in Houston.  Game MVP Chris Paul finished with 20 points, 15 assists and four steals, while Clippers teammate Blake Griffin added 19 points on 9-11 shooting.  Carmelo Anthony had a team-high 26 points for the East, while Dwyane Wade added 21 and seven assists.

 

The Omaha World Herald & Lincoln Journal Star updated their high school basketball rankings today.  The 18-5 Lutheran High Northeast Eagles fall from third to ninth in the Lincoln Journal Star and from seventh to tenth in the Omaha World Herald in Class “C-2”.  They’ve lost three in a row after a 68-41 road loss at West Point Guardian Angels last Saturday.  Norfolk Catholic remains tenth in the Omaha World Herald in Class “C-1”.  The 13-10 Knights lost at home to Hartington Cedar Catholic 67-66 last Friday.  In other high school basketball news, the Omaha World Herald & Lincoln Journal Star report the 11-12  Norfolk High boys basketball team will face 14-8 Lincoln Southeast in a district semifinal game at Lincoln Southwest High School most likely to occur on Saturday.  The Knights beat the Panthers in a regular season game last Saturday 59-44.  The other semifinal matchup would have host team 15-8 Lincoln Southwest meeting 7-15 Millard South.

 

Tonight:  It’s Day One of the Class C-1-8 Boys Sub-District Tournament from Norfolk High School as Battle Creek takes on Madison at 7:00.  Pregame coverage at 6:40 on 106 KIX & 106KIX.com.  The winner plays Boone Central/Newman Grove in the semifinals on Tuesday at 5:40 and Norfolk Catholic takes on Pierce at 7:40.  We’ll cover each game all week.

News Briefs:

Officials at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk have confirmed that CEO Jim Sinek has resigned effective immediately. A spokesman for the hospital says Sinek will remain as a consultant during the transition to a new CEO. Hospital staff were notified by e-mail Friday afternoon of the resignation. Executive staff had been notified earlier in the day.

 

The spirit of giving for which Norfolk and Northeast Nebraska are known was alive and well Saturday during the second annual Youth Philanthropy Contest.  Twenty projects were entered in the contest and eight were selected to receive $1,000 awards from the Connie Fund to help in their efforts.  All 20 projects will be on display Saturday night during the social hour of the Celebrate Giving event at the Divots Conference Center. 

 

A new magazine all about Norfolk hits the news stands in April.  The Director of the Norfolk Area Visitors Bureau Kim Kwapnioski says articles on living, working, playing and growing will highlight the publication.  The magazine will be published twice this year.  The spring/summer issue comes out in April and the fall/winter version is slated for October.  

 

The Madison Country Farm Bureau sponsors a workshop on estate transfer planning Thursday in Norfolk.  Farm Bureau's regional financial advisor, Eryka Morehead says estate planning helps reduce taxes, protect assets from being taken for long-term medical care and is important for the next generation of farmers.  The event is open to the public and free of charge.  The Estate Planning Workshop runs from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Northeast Community College's Lifelong Learning Center.   

 

The Nebraska Public Power District hosts an Integrated Resource Plan open house today. The meeting is held to discuss NPPD's plan for meeting energy needs of the future. The event is open to the public and slated for the Divots Conference Center Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.

 

The new route for a proposed oil pipeline that would carry Canadian crude oil through the state will delay work on electric transmission lines for the pipeline. Nebraska Public Power District officials say they won't be able to build the transmission lines by the deadline TransCanada set for the end of 2014. NPPD Chief Operating Officer Tom Kent says there's no way the transmission lines will be ready by 2015.

 

Lincoln police have identified the Blair man found dead in the stairwell of a downtown parking garage. Police say 24-year-old Matthew Dutton's body was found in the Que Place Garage around 2:30 a.m. yesterday.
