After Saturday's last-second loss at Northern Iowa, the Creighton men's basketball team moved down a few slots in both top-25 polls released yesterday. The Bluejays are down three spots to 15th in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and dropped four slots to 17th in the Associated Press poll. The Bluejays, who are 21-3 overall and 11-2 in the MVC, returns to action tonight with a visit to Evansville.
The Lincoln Journal Star has updated it’s boys & girls basketball rankings. The Norfolk High boys remain second in Class “A” after record a 2-0 mark in the last week. The 19-0 Panthers visit Lincoln East on Friday and host Columbus on Saturday. The Norfolk Catholic boys drop from fifth to seventh in Class “C-1” after a 2-1 week. The Defending Champions will play Sutton at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday at 2:15. The Lutheran High Northeast boys remain third in Class “C-2”. They were 2-0 last week with wins over Columbus Scotus and Omaha Nation. The Eagles will host Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday. The Norfolk Catholic girls slip from third to fifth in Class “C-1” after a 2-1 week. They visit West Point Guardian Angels tonight and host Crofton on Thursday. The Lutheran High Northeast girls jump from third to second in Class “C-2” after beating Columbus Scotus and Omaha Nation last week. The 21-1 Lady Eagles visit Twin River on Thursday.

News Briefs:
Work on Norfolk's massive recreation upgrade that was approved by voters now shifts to TaHaZouka Park. The City Council Monday night awarded a $291,000 bid for work at the south side park to Nemaha Landscape Construction of Lincoln. Public Works Director Dennis Smith says this is phase one of the project which includes construction of rest rooms, a concession stand and parking lot. Phase Two includes more parking, and grading for additional fields just north of McKinley Avenue. Smith says work on phase one will likely begin in mid March and be completed by late summer.
A state lawmaker wants to study the potential cost and impact of switching to single, countywide school districts throughout Nebraska. Omaha Sen. Bob Krist will present a proposal today to the Legislature's Education Committee. The proposed study would examine how a county-by-county district system might work, and whether school districts spanning more than one county should be exempted.
The Pledge of Allegiance and the American Flag would be focal points in Nebraska public school classrooms under a bill introduced by Lincoln State Senator Tony Fulton. The bill, which would require that the Pledge be recited in all public schools daily, will be the subject of a hearing today before the Legislature's Education Committee.
Health care providers say more low-income women in Nebraska are waiting longer for prenatal care that helps protect their unborn children from health risks and complications at birth. Providers say the increase stems from a 2009 federal order that has forced women to travel farther for check-ups.
Nebraska Third District Congressman Adrian Smith says there is still work to be done, and that's why he is seeking another term. Smith, a Republican, was first elected to the seat in 2006.
Humphrey's former mayor has died. Don Zavadil resigned less than a month ago because of health problems. He'd served in a number of roles in his hometown over the past 40 years, including newspaper editor, police chief and city council member.
Prince Charles has led ceremonies to mark the 200th birthday of novelist Charles Dickens. The heir to the British throne laid a wreath today on the writer's grave in Westminster Abbey's Poet's Corner, where actor Ralph Fiennes gave a reading. More events were held in Portsmouth, southern England, where Dickens was born on Feb. 7, 1812.
