The New York Giants are sitting atop the NFL world, climaxing a season that began 7-7 and ended with their fourth Super Bowl title and second in four years.  Eli Manning outplayed Tom Brady, engineering a nine-play, 88-yard drive in the final minutes to make 65-year-old Giants coach Tom Coughlin the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl by a final score of 21-17.  Manning was named the Super Bowl MVP after finishing 30-40 for 296 yards and a touchdown.

 

The Omaha World Herald has updated it’s boys & girls basketball rankings.  The Norfolk High boys remain second in the “Nebraska Top 10” & Class “A” after a 75-54 home win over Fremont last Friday.  The 18-0 Panthers visit Bellevue West tonight at 7:15.  They will visit Lincoln East and host Columbus later in the week.  The Norfolk Catholic boys remain fifth in Class “C-1” after a 1-1 week.  They lost to Boone Central and beat Wayne last week.  The Defending Champions will host O’Neill tonight at 7:45 and will play Sutton at the Heartland Hoops Classic in Grand Island on Saturday.  The Lutheran High Northeast boys moved up from fifth to fourth in Class “C-2”.  They were 2-0 last week with wins over Columbus Scotus and Omaha Nation.  The Eagles will host Hartington Cedar Catholic on Saturday.  The Norfolk Catholic girls slip from fourth to fifth in Class “C-1” after a 1-1 week.  They beat Hartington Cedar Catholic and lost to Pierce last week.  The Lady Knights visit Wayne tonight, West Point Guardian Angels on Tuesday, and then host Crofton on Thursday.  The Lutheran High Northeast girls remain second in Class “C-2” after beating Columbus Scotus and Omaha Nation last week.  The 21-1 Lady Eagles visit Twin River on Thursday.

News Briefs:

No injuries have been reported in a derailment near Monroe in Platte County. Only two cars of a 134-car train left the tracks around 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Some street crossings were blocked for several hours. The Nebraska Central Railroad reports the derailment was cleared by 3 p.m. Sunday.

 

2012 is off to a deadly start on Nebraska roads. The Nebraska State Patrol reports 19 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in January compared to eight last January. Fred Zwonechek of the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety says drivers tend to become complacent during stretches of good weather in winter.

 

Utility crews have restored electricity to all but a few customers after a winter storm passed through Nebraska. Heavy snow on Saturday caused tree limbs to break and knock down power lines, causing more than 15,000 customers to go dark. As of this morning, utility officials reported a dozen customers still without power.

 

Canada's prime minister is flexing his nation's energy muscles with a visit to Beijing. That's according to Chinese analysts who call Stephen Harper's visit to China next week an 'open warning' to the Obama Administration. Last month President Barack Obama rejected a measure backed by Congressional Republicans to speed up construction of TransCanada's Keystone XL pipeline that would pass through Nebraska.

 

Teenagers who age out of Nebraska's foster care system could qualify for medical benefits, college financial aid and other help adjusting to adulthood until they turn 21, under a bill in the Legislature. The measure by Lincoln Sen. Amanda McGill would extend benefits to youths who age out of the state's foster care system at 19. The bill's future is uncertain because of other state funding priorities, but McGill says it would create long-term savings by reducing the number of young adults in prison, who are homeless or have unplanned pregnancies.

 

Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman is hoping for a common sense plan of action to move forward on reform of the child welfare system. He tells WJAG NEWS the most important thing is that reform efforts focus on what is best for children.

 

The Simpsons have been blacklisted in Iran. A government-affiliated agency has added dolls of the Simpsons cartoon characters to a list of banned toys in the country. In January, police closed down dozens of toy shops that sold Barbie dolls.
