The Creighton men’s basketball team jumped from 21st to 16th in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll and moved up from 17th to 13th in the USA Today Coaches poll released yesterday. The 20-3 Bluejays swept two home games in the last week, beating Missouri State 91-77 last Wednesday and defeating Bradley 75-58 last Saturday. Indiana is the new number one in the AP Top 25. Florida, Michigan, Duke, and Kansas round out the top five. Creighton will be in action next when they visit 14-8 Indiana State on Wednesday at 6:05. The Bluejays are 9-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference while the Sycamores are 7-4. In other Creighton men’s basketball news, for the sixth time this season and eleventh time in his career, Doug McDermott has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. He averaged 27 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in the two wins last week.
The Nebraska sand volleyball team announced its 2013 schedule yesterday according to the Omaha World Herald. The Huskers will open their inaugural season of sand volleyball play on March 14 at Chula Vista, Calif., against Florida State. Nebraska will then participate in the Chula Vista Tournament on March 15 and 16. Competition will include Florida State, defending national champion Pepperdine, Cal State-Bakersfield and Grand Canyon. The 2013 collegiate sand championships will be in Gulf Shores, Ala., during the first weekend of May.
The Omaha World Herald & Lincoln Journal Star updated their high school basketball rankings today. In the boys basketball polls, the 18-2 Lutheran High Northeast Eagles remain number one in the Lincoln Journal Star and second in the Omaha World Herald in Class “C-2”. They have won eleven games in a row and 13 of their last 14 after victories over Columbus Scotus and Omaha Nation last week.

The Norfolk City Council has approved the one and six-year public improvement plans submitted by the Norfolk Planning Commission. Public Works Director Dennis Smithy discussed each of the 11 projects including reconstruction of the bridge near the intersection of Norfolk Avenue and Cottonwood Street. The $1.5 million project is currently set for funding by city tax dollars in 2018, but Smith says if the city can procure some federal monies from the Department of Roads, it could be funded sooner.
A 46-year-old Stanton woman has been sentenced to one year in prison following her conviction for Felony Theft. Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says Kathy Sidlinger was sentenced after pleading guilty to the theft of more than $1,500 in cash from the Elkhorn Acres golf course near Stanton last August. District Judge Robert Ensz sentenced Sidlinger following an investigation by the Stanton County Sheriff's Office
Norfolk Catholic officials estimate the high school's seniors served between 3,000 and 3,500 at Sunday's pancake feed to benefit the family of Isaac Pfeiffer, who suffered a severe spinal injury during a state playoff football game in November. The feed also included a silent auction and raffle. Isaac made a visit to the Norfolk Catholic Activities Center Sunday afternoon where he had a chance to visit with family and friends. He remains a patient at the Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln. Norfolk Catholic principal Jeff Bellar says he expects Isaac to return home for good in two to three weeks and looks forward to seeing him at school hopefully sometime in late February.
Authorities are investigating three separate crashes that killed three people in northeast Nebraska. All of the accidents happened between Friday morning and Sunday. The Nebraska State Patrol says 20-year-old Joshua Lytle of Page died early Saturday when the vehicle he was riding in rolled over at a rural intersection west of Newman Grove. Two others in the vehicle were hurt. A few hours later 33-year-old Samuel Hobbs of Ewing died after losing control of his vehicle. The vehicle rolled near a bridge over U.S. Highway 275 east of Ewing. Brian Chase was killed Friday three miles west of Newcastle. The Dixon County Sheriff's office says the 48-year-old Newcastle man was a passenger in a car that struck a tree. The driver was flown to a Sioux City hospital.
Arizona Republican Senator John McCain says he won't support a filibuster of Chuck Hagel's nomination to become defense secretary. But McCain hasn't said whether he'll vote to confirm the former Nebraska senator.
An Omaha man charged with sexually assaulting boys who worked for his lawn care company has been sentenced to at least 195 years in prison. Sixty-three-year-old Daniel Mangiameli was sentenced Monday to 195 to 310 years in prison. Mangiameli is accused of having sexual relationships with dozens of boys over 30 years.
