Two more officers have been approved for the Norfolk Police Division, bringing the sworn staff to the same level as six years ago. At yesterday's budget review session, Police Chief Bill Mizner explained that the Police Division had an authorized strength of 40 officers before 2008, when a cut was made because of budget tightening. Mizner explained that, because of retirements, illness and injury, many of the regular shifts are running short-handed, leading to a reduction in enforcement efforts. Mizner says the two additional officers will cost $134,472 the first year because of equipment and training costs.
