News Briefs:
Roads and sidewalks were quite slick this morning across Norfolk and northeast Nebraska from freezing rain that fell late Sunday night and early this morning. A dispatcher at the Nebraska State Patrol in Norfolk said roads are "ice, all covered." Motorists and pedestrians needed to allow plenty of extra time and drive and walk with caution. A WJAG listener reported it took about two hours to make the trip from Norfolk to Columbus -- a drive that usually takes about 45 minutes. Trucks were out putting down de-icing material on local and area roads.

U.S. Senator Ben Nelson says renewable energy development is a key part of America's national security because it can be done at home. While in Norfolk recently, the Nebraska Democrat said new energy development needs some help from the government to get started  in an effort to support jobs and the environment.

The Nebraska Public Power District has named an interim president and chief executive officer amid its search for a permanent leader. The Columbus-based utility reports John McClure will temporarily assume the leadership position Friday. He is NPPD's vice president for governmental affairs and its general counsel. NPPD has launched a national search for a permanent replacement for Ron Asche, who will step down Feb. 2 to take a job at United Power in Brighton, Colo.

People who park in a handicapped space illegally could find it costing them up to $1,000, even for a first violation. State Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha has introduced a bill that could increase fines sharply for the offense. Current law caps the fine at $150 for a first offense, $300 for a second offense and $500 for a third or subsequent offense within a one-year period. Howard's bill would make any offense - even a first one - subject to a fine of up to $1,000.

If you shovel it, they will come. That's the message from the Norfolk Post Office when it comes to clearing a path to your mailbox with all the snow on the ground. Postmaster Sue Spangler says when mailboxes are buried in snow and ice, it can be difficult for carriers to make deliveries safely.

A 17-year-old Nebraskan too young to cast a ballot has captured enough votes to win the Miss America crown, kick starting her hopes of going to law school and eventually becoming a politician. Teresa Scanlan says she wants to stand up for what is right - integrity and honesty. She is the first Miss America from the Cornhusker State. Scanlan was crowned Saturday night in Las Vegas. She is the youngest Miss America since the pageant's first competition in 1921, which Margaret Gorman of the District of Columbia won at age 15.
