The University of Nebraska announced yesterday that it will add sand volleyball as a women's intercollegiate sport, beginning with the spring 2013 competition season. The addition of sand volleyball to Nebraska's list of sport offerings gives the Huskers 24 intercollegiate programs, 14 women's teams and ten men's teams. Sand volleyball is the first sport Nebraska has added since women's rifle began competition in the 1998-99 season. Current Husker volleyball players may participate. Nebraska coach John Cook and assistant Dan Meske will coach the team.
Coaches have been selected for the first Northeast Nebraska All-Star Football Classic, which will be played on June 8 at Norfolk’s Veterans Memorial Field. Retired National Hall of Fame football coach Bob Schnitzler of Battle Creek will coach the ‘White’ team and long-time Northeast Nebraska area football coach Rich Rethwisch of Wayne will coach the ‘Red’ team. Neither Schnitzler nor Rethwisch are active football coaches. Schnitzler, who is now a commentator for football broadcasts on 106 KIX, will be assisted by Lindsay Holy Family’s Bill Mimick, Elgin Public/Pope John’s Carlie Wells, Oakland/Craig’s Joe Anderson, Osmond’s Rod Brummels and Norfolk High’s Steve Porter. Rethwisch will be assisted by Norfolk Catholic’s Jeff Bellar & Tim Kassmeier, Creighton’s Jeff Jensen, Greg Warneke of Pierce and Niobrara/Verdigre’s Doug Konopasek. The Classic will include players from 59 Northeast Nebraska High School teams. The game will feature athletes from eleven-man, eight-man, and six-man competition. Coaches and players will be determined at a later date for the inaugural game.

The Nebraska Legislature convened for its 2013 session yesterday, with an expected focus on the state budget, tax cuts and a proposal to expand Medicaid. The new session ushered in 11 new members including Senator Jim Sheer of Norfolk who replaces former Speaker Mike Flood, also of Norfolk, who was forced out by term limits.
The city of Norfolk's occupation tax, which was first collected in February of 2011, raised $1.6-million in the last fiscal year, about 79% more than first estimated. The money raised through the tax will be used to pay off the bonds for the $16.4-million recreational project.
The Norfolk City Council has approved an engineering contract with Olsson Associates for engineering services to design and bid the grit dewatering equipment at the wastewater pollution control plant. At this week's meeting of the Council, plant manager Todd Bolling said the piece of equipment being replaced was installed in 1994. The equipment removes gravel and sand from the wastewater stream. The contract with Olsson Associates is for a lump sum of $55,186 and a time and expense agreement for construction management not to exceed an additional $6,600.
Flu has hit across the nation with a vengeance, and two deaths in Lancaster County have been blamed on the virus. John Davies, physician's assistant with Norfolk's Sunny Meadow Medical Clinic says symptoms come on rapidly and include sore throat, fever, coughing and sometime upset stomach. Davies says anyone who received a flu shot this year should be protected, and anyone who did not should get one immediately.
State Climatologist Al Dutcher will discuss implications of the 2012 drought and the 2013 growing season at the Northeast Nebraska Farm and Equipment Show. His presentation begins at 12:30 Wednesday at the Chuck M. Pohlman Ag Complex at Northeast Community College. The Farm Show is set for Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and next Thursday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm..
A special master appointed by the U.S. Supreme Court has recommended that Nebraska pay Kansas $5 million in damages in their dispute over the Republican River Basin, far less than the $80 million demanded by Kansas. The draft report released yesterday was the newest twist in an ongoing water-sharing dispute between the states.
Lincoln police say an elderly man crashed his car through the front door of a pizza restaurant before ordering a pie for himself. The man drove his Honda through a Valentino's chain store yesterday morning. While trapped in his car, the man ordered a pizza. Fire officials took it as a good sign that the man was alert and took him to a hospital. No other injuries were reported.
A judge has denied bail for an Omaha man suspected in a 2011 shooting that killed one and injured another. Twenty-two-year-old Laron Jones was denied bail yesterday. He was arrested earlier this month in connection with the November 16th, 2011 shooting of an Omaha man.
