The center on the University of Nebraska's first post season football team has died. Fred Meier passed away Wednesday in California. He was one of the last surviving members of the Cornhuskers team that lost to Stanford in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1941.

The Nebraska State Patrol reports it made 151 arrests in a crackdown on drunken drivers that included the Christmas and New Year's holidays. A Patrol spokesman says during the period troopers also issued more than 1,000 speeding citations, made 74 arrests for driving with a suspended license and wrote 59 tickets for no proof of insurance.
Nebraska has agreed in a settlement to pay $260,000 to the estate of an Omaha woman who handled duties for the state's juvenile parole office for nearly 30 years and was never paid. Lucile Kilgore died in July at age 88. She had sued the state in 2004 for $447,000 in back pay, claiming the state took advantage of her. A Douglas County judge awarded her the pay, but the state appealed to the Nebraska Supreme Court.
If the budget is the biggest issue facing state senators at they return to Lincoln this week, redistricting is probably the next most important. Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood in Norfolk tells WJAG NEWS when it comes to Congressional redistricting, he is committed to keeping Madison County in the First District.
They started lining up early Monday morning outside one of the offices at the Madison County Courthouse. County Treasurer Donna Primrose tells WJAG NEWS people were there to get their new Nebraska licenses plates -- which are being issued for the first time today. The design that will be used starting this year is a gold, black, green and white plate bearing images of the state bird and flower. The design was selected last spring through an online poll. Primrose says you may obtain the plates in person at a courthouse, in the mail -- or order online at dmv.ne.gov.
There is still time to sign up for the Healthy Benefits weight management class offered at Norfolk's Faith Regional Health Services beginning Wednesday night. Registered dietician Vicki Brown says the ten week program will look at sensible eating and active living and the concept of intuitive eating.
A Valley County man is set to make his television debut tonight on the Discovery Channel's hit TV show, "Dirty Jobs." Ben Schamp of Elyria works at Warner Construction Asphalt and is shown dumping and spreading hot asphalt in the episode that was filmed in western Nebraska in August.
