Nebraska U.S. Senator Mike Johanns says the killings of 20 first graders and six adults at the Sandy Hook elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut raises many questions, but it will be difficult for the government to find answers. He points out that Connecticut is considered a leader in mental health issues and already has strict gun laws.
Flags at the Iowa capitol in Des Moines were lowered Monday to honor the victim of a double murder in Antelope County. Monday would have been Victoria Lee Vargas's 26th birthday. The former Iowa legislative page and her husband were killed December 9th east of Ewing. Their bodies were found in a burning trailer, and 33-year-old Matthew Hinrichsen faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths. Victoria Vargas served as a page in the Iowa Senate eight years ago. She was also elected to the Missouri Valley City Council at the age of 19.
A fire in Norfolk on New Year's Day caused $45,000 damage to a home on North 8th Street. Fire Captain Steve Bettendorf reports that firefighters were called to 209 North 8th Street at 9:53 last night. He says firefighters were able to control the blaze in about 30 minutes, but remained on the scene until 12:30 this morning searching for and extinguishing hot spots. The house is owned by John Kubr of Columbus and occupied by Miguel Ramirez-Adams. There were three occupants in the home when the fire broke out, and all were able to escape without harm. No smoke detectors were present. Preliminary investigation shows the cause of the fire to be electrical in nature, but the fire is still under investigation. Estimated loss is $45,000 to the structure and another $5,000 to contents. Bettendorf says one firefighter received a minor injury when he slipped and fell on the ice, but he did not require medical attention.

A Lancaster County district judge has refused to block a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of Nebraska's new pipeline siting law. Judge Stephanie Stacy on Monday denied a state request to dismiss the lawsuit that was filed in May by three landowners along the proposed route of the Keystone XL pipeline. The lawsuit says the law that passed in April unlawfully delegated powers to the governor that belong with the Public Service Commission. It also says the law stemmed from unconstitutional special legislation because it benefited only one entity, TransCanada.
