Producers need to determine when to shut off irrigation

NORFOLK - Area producers are anxious to turn off their center pivots – and a University of Nebraska Irrigation Specialist has some tips on deciding when to do that.  Bill Kranz says the first step is to determine the maturity of the crop.  Kranz says there are online publications from the University to estimate the water needs for the rest of the year, based on maturity. He says the next step is to determine how much moisture is available for the crop in the soil. If farmers have soil water sensors, that is easy. If they have to use the “hand feel” method, it is a little harder and less exact.  Kranz says more information on determining the final irrigation for crops can be found at the web site water.unl.edu.
