Petition Effort Comes Up Short

MADISON - Madison County citizens will not be voting on a question this fall to expand the number of members on the county board. The deadline for circulators to turn in petitions was 5:00 Monday afternoon. Madison County Clerk Nancy Scheer says no petition was filed with her office yesterday. 1,069 signatures were needed to get the question on the November 6th ballot. Backers of the effort would like to expand the three member Madison County Board of Commissioners to five. They say one of the main reasons for the change is that only two members are needed for a quorum of the board -- leading to concerns about accidentally violating the state's open meetings law.
