Omaha mayor's office investigating ex-fire chief

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Now that a tentative agreement for Omaha's former fire chief to retire has been scrapped, the mayor's office has announced it is investigating the former chief.  Former Chief Mike McDonnell is under investigation, although officials with Mayor Jean Stothert's office would not say what the investigation entails.  Stothert's investigation signals the mayor's plan to seek legal grounds under which she could fire McDonnell.  McDonnell resigned from his longtime post Monday under a deal with Stothert that would have blocked significant cuts to the fire department over the next year. He remains on paid administrative leave, and Battalion Chief Bernard Kanger is interim chief.  Stothert announced Friday that tentative retirement agreement had fallen through.
