Norfolk Youth Leadership Council seeks to advise city leaders

NORFOLK - The Norfolk Youth Leadership Council is an organization of high school students dedicated to providing a voice for youth on the city’s policy issues.  The council was founded by Senator Mike Flood when he was a student in the mid 1990s.  Current president Arria Lakha is senior at Norfolk Senior High.  She says over the past few years, the group has functioned as a community service organization.  Now members want to focus more on carrying out the group’s original objectives, namely to advise city leaders on youth issues and to take political stands within the community.  The Norfolk Youth Leadership Council currently has 31 members.  Lakha says the council always has representatives aat all Norfolk City Council meetings and will soon release a list of priorities that will include the Rec Center, student loans and alternatives to teen drinking.  The council meets every other Sunday at the Norfolk City Council Chambers.
