Minnesota Tribe Helping Santee, Others with High Propane Prices
BISMARCK, N.D. - A Minnesota American Indian tribe is helping out three other tribes, including the Santee Sioux in Knox County, hard hit by high propane prices. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux are providing $70,000 to the Santee Sioux Nation, $300,000 to the Yankton Sioux Tribe in South Dakota, and $500,000 to the Standing Rock Sioux, whose reservation straddles the North Dakota – South Dakota state line. The Minnesota tribe operates several enterprises, including a casino, and runs a charitable giving program. The propane shortage and high propane prices have hit American Indian reservations hard, since many residents there rely on propane for heat.
