Madison County Food-Stamp Use Increases

NORFOLK - The use of food stamps – or SNAP as it is now known – increased in Madison County between 2007 and 2011. U.S.D.A. figures show 10.1 percent of the county’s residents received assistance in 2011, compared with 8 percent in 2007.  Michelle Kroupa is the nutrition extension advisor in Madison County. Her job includes providing nutritional education for income-eligible families who receive SNAP.  "We teach them how to shop for inexpensive food and make their food-dollar stretch," said Kroupa.  Nutritional education is offered at several locations through the Madison County Extension Service.  Kroupa teaches group classes and also works with clients one-on-one. Kroupa says any person or group wanting more information about the SNAP-ed program can call her at (402) 370-4040.
