Laurel Woman Faces DUI, Assault Charges

NORFOLK - A 31-year-old Laurel woman is accused of assaulting two Norfolk police officers as she refused to submit to a blood alcohol test Monday evening. Police Chief Bill Mizner says Amy Whyte was arrested at 5:17 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of West Pasewalk Avenue after an officer observed her fail to yield the right of way to another vehicle at the intersection of 1st Street and Norfolk Avenue. Whyte refused to take a preliminary breath test at the scene. She was taken to Faith Regional Health Services, where she assaulted officers while in an elevator. Two officers were kicked numerous times. One suffered an abrasion to his head, a bite to his finger and a broken hand. Whyte was arrested for felony third offense driving under the influence, assaulting an officer, obstructing an officer and refusal to submit to either a preliminary breath test or a chemical test. She was taken to the Madison County Jail.
