Lathrop Declines to Run for Governor
OMAHA (AP) - State Sen. Steve Lathrop has announced he will not run for Nebraska governor to fill the seat being vacated by the term-limited Gov. Dave Heineman. Lathrop said in a statement Friday that he will focus on representing his Omaha district in the legislative session that begins in January. Lathrop's announcement comes a day after fellow Democrat Annette Dubas, a state lawmaker from Fullerton, announced she would join former University of Nebraska Regent Chuck Hassebrook in next spring's Democratic gubernatorial primary. Lathrop had long been considered a possible Democratic candidate, along with former gubernatorial candidate Mike Meister, a Scottsbluff attorney who lost to Heineman in 2010. On the GOP side, state Sen. Charlie Janssen of Fremont has declared his candidacy, while several other GOP contenders are considering a run.
